I've been looking at getting my first MPEG4 hardware player and I've narrowed it down to two - Philips DVP-5100/05 or Sony DVP-NS52P - since they're new models (in the UK at least) and at a good price. I've found the Philips is based on the Mediatek "FE" chipset which, assuming its better than the "EE", seems to be pretty good but apart from that I can find little information on the two.

I'd be interested in opinions and information on these from the learned Doom9 folk...

Both players carry badges by respected manufacturers...

Apart from this there does not appear to be any detailed information about either of the players... Where did you find out about the chip-sets?

Cheers

OK I think I'll take that back a bit since I cant find the page I read about the chipset on again.

The softpedia forum (http://board.softpedia.com/index.php?showtopic=439) and MTZ's DivX Player Database (http://mtz.softpedia.com/dvd/) show the Philips 5100 as having a Mediatek (MTK) chipset but not which one. I'm also wondering is that the same machine as a "5100/05".

Still no info on the Sony box.
