I know... this is a newbie irritating question, but I wouldn't ask if I wasn't able to use the Doom9 guides... this one, http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/gknot-main4.htm, is outdated, just downloaded the GordianKnot Rippack and GordianKnot Codec pack, but there's no correspondence between pictures and actual options inside GK..

I have to convert some digital sport events, NO DVD ripping, just pure excellent MPEG2 files, but using AutoGK gives me unsatisfactory results compared to other videos around the Internet... so I was looking for the ABSOLUTE best way to convert them to xvid/AVI.

Please point me to the best method for the best result...

In order to get BEST results, you have to be firstly acquainted with Avisynth. Xvid is not a determining factor for quality :)

You could alternatively open the mpeg2 file in VirtualDub Mod, this gives you the added benefit of being able to apply filters to alter your resulting avi such as resizes or logo removal, etcetera and is a good idea if avisynth seems awkward although avisynth is a great tool!

Hello,

Try using search on sport sources, I remember reading a few posts giving explanations on why sport sources are difficult to compress/encode: high motion frames & high and low motion mixed --> heavy avisynth filtering needed :(
