I have recently installed autogk on a machine. When I launch autogk it establishes a connection to stormwest via port 80. I have removed the dae.dll file which i understand to be the adware. I removed dae by using both the control panel and deleting the file from windows\system32. I am running many machines (5) all with autoGK and they dont appear to connect to stormwest. Can anyone please explain why this machine would.
I have uninstalled autogk - clean the reg several times and re-installed. I know its the autogk program that is making the connection because i can see it via tcpview.
I have ran virus scan, spybot and other utils - the machine checks out fine.
TIA

Len0x,
Thanks for a quick reply. Is there a way to turn this function off - via a registry setting or an ini file?
Thanks

I've checked the installation of AutoGK 1.95, and you CAN'T turn the "check for updates" off. There are no options in the program, and nothing found in the registry OR INI file(s) that would allow the user to turn this "feature" off. Apparently, it is hardcoded into the program. AutoGK immediately establishes a tcp/ip connect to stormwest.com upon starting, and keeps a "CLOSED_WAIT" tcp/ip state while AutoGK is running, instead of releasing that connection when it is finished "checking for updates".
One thing I'm curious about is why are you associated with stormwest.com? Don't they have strong marketing (and other) associations with certain unnamed Movie production companies? I'm wondering if this is a coincidence, or something else.
And Finally: I've found that AutoGK has hooks into the Internet Explorer History, Temporary Internet Files cache, and Cookie cache....EVEN after the DAE spyware/adware component has been removed via either the included uninstall, or my DAE removal tool (http://trystiansky.i8.com/). Is there OTHER adware included, or do you need to hook into some IE fuctionality for AutoGK to work?
Keep in mind this is all observations from AutoGK 1.95 ONLY.

@Trystian, Delete the file '.versioncheck' from C:\Program Files\AutoGK or whereever you have AutoGK installed. AutoGK checks for the existence of this file and then tries to check for updates. Try deleting this file and then see if tries to establish connection to Stormwest.com.
P.S: I too am concerned with the association with Stormwest. I hadn't known about it before. Hopefully len0x would have a good explanation for this.

I should have kept in mind the Occam's Razor principle. The simplest answer is most likely the correct one. That should have been the first place I looked.
I deleted the versioncheck file, and it doesn't appear to be checking the stormwest.com site now. Thank you. :D
