View Full Version : Can only open 1 Xvid file at a time, additional windows can't find codec

I've been backing up my TV-on-DVD collection on my 2.8GHz P4 w/ 512MB of RAM running Win98SE w/ XviD-1.0-09052004. When several episodes are done encoding, I like to open them all at once (I use WMP Classic that came w/ Win98) and play them 1 by 1 to check for audio sync, aspect ratio, etc. This works just fine w/ Divx files, but when I do it w/ Xvid files, only 1 window works properly. The rest of the windows say they can't find the codec and attempt to contact Microsoft to download it.
And what's even weirder (and even more frustrating) is that I can't open any Xvid files while DVD2AVI is converting VOB files to a .d2v project. I get the same "can't find codec" error. So how do I fix this?

Nobody has any ideas? I think it's a big clue that DVD2AVI and Xvid playback won't work at the same time. So what do they have in common?

DVD2AVI has nothing to do with XviD.
Did you try some other player other than WMP? Like BSPlayer, ZoomPlayer, MPC or VLC Media Player?

I wouldn't think they'd have anything to do w/ each other either, but it happens every time -- if I'm converting a vob file with DVD2AVI, I can't play any Xvid files. On the other hand, I can be compressing an Xvid file w/ VDubMod and other Xvid files will play just fine. So maybe it has to do w/ something that has to do w/ the decompression of vid files?
I'm not familiar w/ any of those other players... do they allow multiple windows? I'd prefer to avoid another player... I'm familiar w/ WMP and I don't want to have to install/uninstall a bunch of software.

Well I experimented a bit last night and I discovered that I can't open Xvid files any time DVD2AVI is open -- whether it's converting vob files or not. I know DVD2AVI has a lot of other features besides creating d2a projects... it is possible that it automatically accesses the available codecs when u open the program? If so, it would be like having another WMP window open, and that's why I can't play Xvid files. But it doesn't do this w/ Divx files, so what's different between Xvid and Divx that Xvid can only be accessed by 1 file at a time.

I think it may have to do something with XviD and DVD2AVI decoding / delivering YV12 data or something with overlay.
DivX either decodes to YUY2 and / or doesnt use Overlay surface at 2nd instance I guess.

w/ XviD-1.0-09052004
Perhaps try a newer version of xvid, that one's a bit out of date.

Well I got it figured out... I just went to the Xvid decoder configurations. There's a box that says something "Compatibility render"... I checked it and now I can open multiple Xvid windows even if DVD2AVI is running. And just in case anyone else comes across this problem, I also noticed that Xvid files wouldn't open while PowerDVD was running either. This will fix that as well.
