Hi.
Has there been any comparison amongst AAC, ac3 and mp3 audio ? I'd appreciate some links for reading.
Regards.

Very useful information for aac and mp3. ac3 hasn't been tested...

The link is about which encoder performs best at prescribed bitrates using the AAC and mp3 compression algorithms. Not exactly the stuff I was looking for. I'm interested in a comparison not between encoders (e.g. Sorenson Squeeze 3.5 Fhg Pro and Psytel AAcenc 2.15), but the comression algorithms themselves.

AAC has everything that mp3 has plus a lot more. It supports a wider range of block sizes, prediction filters, and I don't remember what else. A good place to start reading is here: mpeg site (http://www.mpeg.org/MPEG/aac.html) . This is also a good site to learn about mp3 theory.
AC3 is a proprietary format and you will not find much detail about how it works. However, there must be some people who know because it has been reverse engineered by several folks (e.g. azid software used in BeSweet for audio recompression from DVD's).
I hope this helps a little.

Yes, indeed, it does help quite a lot.

AC-3 specs are publically available in the ATSC-A52 document.
