I just don't know what it does and when should you use it.
should it be used all the time? and if possible can someone tell me the advantage of doing it? :(
and I read somewhere that nero showtime is the best player.
does this means that it plays it the way a standalone would play?
thanks

DVD players do not understand a basic file structre like your computer does.. there is no VTS01_01.VOB etc as far as the player is concerned just the physical sectors each file resides at
therefore, when backing up a dvd, doing ANY modifications you need to do a "get sectors" which properly sets the sector location in the IFO's that this file and this part of the file would be at if/when it's burned to a disk

Normally, there's no need for that. If I'm not mistaken, a Get VTS sector looks at the sizes of the VOB, IFO and BUP files in your DVD, and updates the pointers in the IFOs (and BUPs) to make sure they point to the beginning of the right files. That's because settop boxes use these pointers to locate the start of the IFO and VOB files. Software players don't use these pointers, so a DVD with bad VTS sectors might play fine in a soft player, but fail to play in a settop box.
You will need to do a Get VTS Sectors when you mock with a VOB/IFO file with a program that does not do it for you. PgcEdit and vobblanker do the right things so there's no need for that. Most decent DVD tools do it. It's just in some strange cases that you need to.
Can't answer your showtime question but if you mean "if it plays in showtime am I sure it will play in my standalone", I think your answer is no! A DVD which plays in a soft player isn't guaranteed to play in a settop box.

What Jean said, "..updates the pointers".
I have to use it whenever I physically removed the trailing VTS-es after VTS-01 the main movie. Think of it as re-registering the whole dvd structure...."this dvd does not have this anymore but that has been added.."
ShowTime has not failed me yet in xxx number of backups.
I have mentioned this before: I always use DVDshrink to verify the folder after fooling around. If there is ANY problem, it tells me and which one at that! :p So in it goes in IFOedit, VOBextra this MENUextra that and then GET VTS SECTOR. Recheck again in DVDshrink, if it loads then voila!

Yes, but any normal (i.e., not demented ;)) user shouldn't need to use Get VTS Sectors!
However, if you find that your DVD does not load in DVD Shrink, like Surf said, it's always a good idea to try the mock strips. Although I don't think DVD Shrink really cares about VTS sectors, but I may be wrong!

Hey, i am not the best speller.:D
@ jean
so if i use pgcedit to kill and blank vob, i would not need to do a get sector.
thanks

Gee what are you trying to do, insult r0lZ?! :D :D
of course not! PgcEdit has its own Get VTS sector, so does vobblanker (and so does menushrink by the way).
jeanl
EDIT: In PgcEdit, just for your info, simply opening and saving the DVD does a get vts sectors for you...

Strangely enough, as D3s7 has pointed out, you have absolutely no need for a VTS Sectors calcuation if you're only playing on a PC based player like Showtime. It uses the filesystem and can easily identify files by names :)
DVD Shrink couldn't care less about the sector allocations it gets either - it writes entirely new ones when it processes (of course!)

HI
let me see if i understand
so when you play a dvd in the standalone,
the dvd player only read the ifo to see where to go and what to do.
But when you play in the computer
the player does not really care about the sectors because it can just read the files.
am i close to right:)

yes you're right. It still reads the video_ts.ifo (and other ifos) to find all sorts of other info of course, but not to find other IFOs etc...

am i close to right:) A brief explanation on correcting sectors has been here (http://ifoedit.wh.fr0zen.com/calcsec.html), topside, for a long time.
