View Full Version : TV cap(mjpeg/avi) -> xvid -> xvid player= failure...(why)

So, here's the thing. After much effort, I mastered the process of
capturing off the tube and making normal high quality dvd's.

So naturally, I wanna try something else.:rolleyes:

So I figure I'll settle on xvid, to put to movies on a single disk.
However, I have not been able to do this successfully.
I can make the xvid's.
I can plop them onto a dvd.
I can play them back on the computer...
I cannot get them to play on my tv.
I'm pretty sure my system plays xvids, as I download some legal samples
to test the system.(Please note that I doubled checked to ensure the
clips were legal)

The system is a modded xbox(modded purely for educational
testing purposes, of course)

I've tried autogk. I've tried gk. Nada. Files are saved as avi's.
What, I wonder, am I missing...???
Note; I followed the guide found here to the letter (the xvid/gk one)

So why, pray tell, will they not play.:confused: :confused:

Using the latest xvid codec from their site
No idea about dshow filters...
Options used were the ones suggested in the guide here.
Only made two copies of the same two shows, using nero 1@iso 1@ udf

Winxp sp1
2500+ athlon 512ram
5200fx card

So you compiled it yourself?

Never used XBMC, but I assume it has a file browser type interface. Do they just not show up? Show up, but when you click on them it doesn't play or what? You never really said what the problem was.

They do not even show up.
They play fine on windows.
Gspot reports them as xvids.

Sounds like a burning/media issue to me then.

Definatley. AFAIK, XBMC uses ffmpeg code for decoding videos.

My buddy has a modded xbox, and whenever I bring videos over on CD-R or DVD-R it reads them without issue. Try different brands of CDRs or something...

Sorry, I guess I shouldda mentioned that the media works fine on the
xbox...used both to back up legally owned games and to play tv captures
burnt as standard dvd's.

Hah...what a freakin joke.
Took another stab at it.
Set it to make me a file 1.4 gig. It gave me 5 files totaling almost 9 gigs.

Talk about a useless endeavour.

I guess I give divx a try, as this xvid is clearly meant for uber-technogeeks,
as opposed to average smoes like myself.
Pity too, cuz it seemed so promising. But, at the end of the day, I need
something that actually does what it's supposed to. Xvid\gk\agk simply
does not work for me...though I've no doubt smarter folks have got it to work.
I need something easier to use that actually works.
