View Full Version : Saving movie trailers from some sites.

Movie Trailers are promotional materials and can be downloaded from many sites to play at the viewer's convenience. That by itself should not be illegal.
Some trailer-sites show trailers in a window that does not have any buttons for saving it, e.g. trailer of Samson and Delilah (http://videodetective.com/home.asp?PublishedID=3538) at videodetective.com, linked from IMDb. These trailers (QuickTime/WMP) download (around 15-40 MB) and play. They presumably play from the RAM.
How does one go about saving them?
Regards.

Try right-clicking on the video and selecting "Properties" and then looking for the location of the video file, then copy&paste it into the address bar. This works for me using the ActiveX media player plugin from WMP9.

Thanks. There is no 'Properties' on right-clicking. Try the the link in my first post and see if there's a way.
Regards.
You can saved quicktime trailers with quicktime pro.

If you right-click somewhere other than the movie box, you can view the page source. Sometimes the url for the movie is in the page source directly. Sometimes it has a link to the actual link for the movie.

The movie link is this (http://videodetective.net/player.asp?customerId=97135&cmd=3&clientskip=255&videokbrate=100&PublishedId=3538). I found it out by methods described in your post. If you click on the link, the WMPlayer will open and display the video. WMP's File > Save as button is greyed out. How do I save (capture?) a copy?
Sorry for missing what's probably obvious.

wow..... I remember watching that as a kid, what a classic.
moral of the story.. NEVER TRUST WOMEN ;)

Yeah, okay. I won't trust many women. And it is a classic.
Back to the other matter: can you save the video in your hard drive?
Regards.
The file the links points to (right-click and save destination as...) contains the following lines:
<ASX VERSION="3.0">
<TITLE>Video Detective, LLC</TITLE>
<AUTHOR>VideoDetective.com</AUTHOR>
<ENTRY ClientSkip="YES">
<PARAM NAME="PublishedId" VALUE="3538"/>
<COPYRIGHT>Paramount Home Video</COPYRIGHT>

PublishedId=3538

</ASX>
I was then able to download the trailer using a downloadmanager that can download via the "rtsp" streaming protocol : i used nettransport for this (www.xi-soft.com)
I hope this helps,
MTM.

It certainly helped.

Now let's see how far I can honor your training, MTM.
This Pitch Black (http://www.imdb.com/rg/TITLETRA_VIDDET//http://videodetective.com/home.asp?PublishedID=460125) trailer: the link is this (http://videodetective.com/player.asp?PublishedId=460125&List=645790|935223&Customerid=97135).
Right click this link...save destination as ...I get this: player.asp.htm. (In the earlier case I got player.asp.asx.)
On opening this player.asp.htm, I get:

This is now confusing....
Well,this was a really tough one ...
Note that i am not an expert or professional at web-design,streaming or networks in general ... just an average guy who sometimes does this himself and therefor has some experience ...
So here it goes:
In this case they use "Active Server Pages" (Microsoft!) and furthermore an "ActiveX"-Browser-plugin (Microsoft!) , so thats (generaly) bad for our mission ;-)
To make a long story short : the link to the important file is
http://videodetective.net/player.asp?customerId=97135&cmd=3&clientskip=255&videokbrate=100&PublishedId=460125
where "videokbrate=100" means the bitrate of the trailer (possible values are 56,100,300) and "PublishedId=460125" is the number of this particular trailer of "Pitch Black". Inside this file are the now familiar links for the streaming-protocols (rtsp etc.) with which you proceed as usual (i.e. Nettransport) ...
If you (or somebody else) is interested in the (long) way I got to the link , i'll explain it further , but beware it was an ugly task and will be even uglier to explain ... ;-) I had to read some Page-sources, copy and paste some links and after some luck : Bingo! the right file which we needed ...
I hope this helps (again),
MTM.

I used CoCSoft Stream Down to download from RTSP:// and MMS://.
You can find it in this page: http://cocsoft.com .
The bad thing is, that it's a shareware.

I give up. Please explain it the ugliest way possible. I've braced myself, and my jaws hurt...
@ Winamp_Hater:
Thanks. The NetTransport MTM spoke of is also a shareware, though.
Regards.
Hello ukb008,
remember : the first time it took me about 15 mins and a good portion of good luck to get the desired info.
My steps (the short version without the many trial and errors) were as follows:
1. Open the link "Pitch Black" (the first one in your post above) and click on the "preview" button.
2. A new window opens in which normally (in MS IE) the videotrailer would play (remember i use firefox). Right-click and select "view source".
3. In the page-source you will find a line containing src="play.asp?New=True&List=645790&PublishedId=460125&VideoKbrate=300&ListID=&CustomerId=97135&HasPlayer="
4. In a new browser goto to the adress : videodetective.com/ plus the text between the "" : videodetective.com/play.asp?New=True&List=645790&PublishedId=460125&VideoKbrate=300&ListID=&CustomerId=97135&HasPlayer=
5. View the source. Therein is a url ("http://videodetective.com/videoad/ads.asp?CustomerId=97135&List=645790&PublishedID=460125&Videokbrate=300") you have to copy and paste to a browser window and then view the source of it.
6. You see 4 http-links. Copy and then download (downloadmanager?) the right one : remember the PublishedId=460125 which is the ID of the desired trailer (see my post above).
This is finally the .asx-file in which you will find the rtsp:-link you can download the familiar way ...
Puh, as I said , it was a tough one ... :sly:
I hope this little "HowTo" is useful for you ...
Bye,
MTM.

FlashGet is free for use, but with ads.

I will point out the obvious and state that I think it's absurd that they try and not let you save a Movie Trailer :sly:
A Movie Trailer is promotional material which is also nice for fans to save and keep, and in the future some time play again - without having to go through the performance of finding and downloading it again :)
These companies making it spitefully difficult to save Trailers are doing nothing but annoy the customer.
I have my Harry Potter trailers saved because I like the books and the Movies. I've paid hundreds of dollars counting buying the books, DVDs - & a couple of VHS copies, plus paying for Cinema Tickets when they were there. I don't think there's anything morally wrong with wanting to have a trailer saved so I can view it sometimes ......
Net Transport by Xi is quite good. It used to be freeware/donationware. WMR version 7.0 used to be good for MMS streams

It's beautiful. Not the trailer (that's ok), I mean, the way you've done this. Thanks very much.
I agree that it's ugly: it's not worth the the time, the energy, the persistence etc needed to achieve the goal.
I agree with video_magic. If they don't want the promos to be downloaded, then we don't need to view them at all. Downloading a trailer each time I want to view it is plain nonsense. To hell with it.
And Winamp_Hater: I'm not sure if FlashGet can download rtsp or mms links. By the way, why d'you hate winamp?
Regards.

I'm sure about FlashGet - Now I use it! ;)
And I hate winamp, because it caused me something like a system crash.
Hello,
ukb008 , thank you for your kind words ...
Why they don't want us to download the trailers ? I just say one word : Copyright :mad:.
Bye,
MTM.
