movie only => wrong subs

looks like movie-only processes wrong subtitles and maps them incorrectly.

i just tried to run an already rebuild dvd with movie only and removed all but 2 subtitles (left 0x20 and 0x2b), but for some odd reason the rebuild dvd got 0x2b and 0x2f.
even more interesting they were both mapped to 0x20 (that's what the ifo said).

i know, mine was preprocessed (already rebuilt once), but at least the source seemed to be fine: subs played ok, and were correct in the ifo & vobs. Khauron has tried with 2 un-preprosessed and has similar results...

has anyone made a successfull movie-only while
a) stripping some subtitles
b) leaving all subtitles

i think there's still some problems (new ones) in 0.88...

i ran movie-only, uncompressed marking all but 2 subtitles to be deleted (left only 2 ticked).

still the ifo has 0x20 and 0x20 (the same stream id twice)
PLUS the VOBs have all the streams (not only those 2)
PLUS for some odd reason that i cannot understand, when use pgcdemux to demux all the subtitle streams, rebuilt streams are a bit larger than the original! not to mention that the subtitles didn't work (with SW player) :-(

1 thing did just pop into my mid: could this 0x20 have something to do with this weirdness (ifoedit shows 0x20 for each and everyone).
dvd has 15 subtitle streams. i wanted to keep 1st (0x20) and 12th (0x2b).

t :) Is this title in 16:9 or 4:3? If it is in 16:9 (I think it has to be) there is usually two streams identified, one for widescreen and one for letterbox display. Look in the PGC for the main movie and see what stream is applied to each of the two states for each subtitle. DVD-RB pulls the stream information from the PGC itself (because that is the info that has to apply when in movie-only mode).

Normally both states use the same subpicture stream. But in your case above the English subtitles would be used in letterbox mode no matter what language you choose.

Is this a commercial DVD? Have you modified it?

not 100% sure, what you asked,
but looking at the PGC i can see each sub-picture stream having

0 for 4:3
x-1 for wide
x-1 for letterbox
0 for pan&scan

where x is the number of the stream (thus 0 for stream 1, 1 for stream 2 and so on).

i.e. same stream for wide and letterbox.
and yes, this is 16:9.

ps rebuilding 70% done, you'll get the IFOs soon.

You have to be looking in the wrong place... because IFOEDIT is seeing more than one stream for each...

Is there more than one PGC? The largest one has precedence. What does the last one have?

I think what is happening in your case is that there is another PGC following the main PGC that has the substreams identified differently. The second one is overriding the values found in the first one. So all the subtitles have been identified as being stream 0x20. It would be removed, because it shows on the "not selected" list.

I've just changed the code so it only collects from the PGC that has been selected as the "movie-only" PGC.

i think it's easier if i just send you the org ifo 1st (have to wait for the rebuilt one for a while, because i ran out of disk and have to do that for the 5th time....)

anyway, there are 2 PGCs in the main (1st) VTS.
1st PGC is the main movie, 2nd is just 12 frame blank.

for the 2nd PGC all sub-picure streams are mapped to stream 0 (i guess, that's why i saw those 0x20s for every stream)..

ps IFOs on the way.

now that the rebuilt is done again, i noticed something else...
i demuxed subpictures from 1 vob id from the original and rebuilt and this time the rebuilt vob has all but 0x20. and they have the same size as the originals. perhaps i was looking something wrong in the morning.

that missing 0x20 explains, why i cannot see any during playback.
still ifo lists 0x20 twice, but i selected 0x20 and 0x2b to be kept.

interesting...

any news after looking at the IFOs?

Just so you know, the original IFO is not correctly constructed. In the second PGC it has the high order bit set for each of the subpictures (indicating that a subpicture stream is present) -- but then lists no substreams in the list (everything other than the "stream available" bit is zero. That's what is causing the problem. I've modified my source to accomodate this. The change will be in v0.89.

reg the bug in ifo, should we inform disney/pixar ;-) ??

i just double checked the files from this morning and indeed
the rebuilt subtitles are longer (edit: bigger size) than the original ones (all, but 0x20, which is considerably smaller and obviously missing from the vob id that i used for checking in the 2nd try).

Well I guess anything is possible -- but since the only think DVD-RB does is use the sectors containing subtitles from the original, I can't imagine from where the extra data could be coming??? I'll look at it but I have to say I'm pretty skeptical...

As for contacting Pixar/Disney... I'll leave that up to you. But unless they truly wanted to reference the non-existent English subtitles for every language in the second PGC... it's wrong.

I could point out several hundred other incorrect authoring errors I've found on commercial DVDs from pretty much every manufacturer... from bad cuts and illegal MPEG sequences to unreferenced material and general goofiness. I've spent a considerable amount of time modifying DVD-RB to accommodate those as well.
