hello,
i've been reading alot about HDV lately wich is a new consumer high definition format. the high definition is compressed as mpeg 2 transport stream to have the same bitrate as dv.

now many editing programs have plugins to allow you to edit hdv footage.

my question is:
will these plugins allow me to edit video from a dvd without transcoding the dvd to avi?
i think a dvd doesn't hold mpg2 transport streams but im not sure.

just looking for an easy way to edit some dvd footage. thanks,
max

Hello sunchaser,

It is necessary that you know that the transfer of data HDV on PC is done in Mpeg2 TS.
2 options are then possible: either you work directly in native MPEG or you forward by an intermediate codec.

The first solution would be the best, but Mpeg2 requires a very great computing power, the simple fact of decoding a Mpeg2 flow in 1080i monopolizes the whole of the resources of a processor.
Another disadvantage compression in Mpeg2 appears rather destroying (encoding and decoding generates losses in terms of quality of image safe in the event of "Smart Rendering".

Nevertheless an alternative exists and certain groups understood it well, which consists in employing an intermediate codec: faster than Mpeg2 and less destructor.
By using the plugins ConnectHD and AspectHD published by Cineform you can carry out acquisition by controlling the video camera via a specific HDLink utility.
Mpeg2 flow is converted with an intermediate codec, even in real time realising with the minimun a P4 processor given rhythm with 3Ghz.
But the stability of this solution is however not yet optimal.

If that can reassure you, Cineform HDLink can propose 3 possibilities of capture to you:
- Automatically convert to CineForm HD format (avi);
- Convert to CineForm HD format and keep Mpeg2-TS slips by (m2t);
- Capture only from Mpeg2-TS (m2t).
