View Full Version : Missing M2V Files

For anyone who can repeat this "MISSING M2V FILE" error using CCE v2.70, v2.66, or v2.67:

Could you please try this:

After the REBUILD phase, in the REBUILDER.ECL file do a global find and replace. Change all entries saying "adjust_q_matrix=0" to "adjust_q_matrix=1". Then run the ENCODE phase and see if the error is still there.

I'm trying to find out if this setting has an impact on the missing M2V problem.

If you'd report back I would sincerely appreciate it.

Thanks.

Looking at your log I suspect you selected the wrong mode in dvd-rb. With cce 2.67 you should select CCE SP and not CCE SP TRIAL or other CCE.

edit: the reason I say this is because I am seeing quality_prec: 24.96 where with 2.67 it wouldn't need to convert to 0-100 where it applies at cce 2.50 and cce 2.70 (although the correct converted value should be 25). Cce 2.67 uses 0-64 limit.

Tube
25th April 2005, 14:23
I have the CCE SP mode selected, so I don't think the problem lies there. Yes I know there are other encoders out there, but in that case I might as well run the movie through DVD Shrink, and the result out of that encoder is a disaster, and imho CCE is the only option when it comes to high quality encoding.

You're missing onesoul's point. You're probably not supposed to have CCE SP selected. Select CCE SP Trial and see what happens.

@jdobbs

Sorry Master, but Tube reports using CCE 2.67, so he SHOULD NOT be selecting CCE SP Trial, as this setting is for CCE 2.70 Trial only, Right?

Looking at the item.ecl I noticed there is a one frame segment, and that video_type=4. I do not remember now, but is it the video_type for VBR or CBR? If it is for CBR I have nothing to say, but if it is the one for VBR I think that may be you were not right when changed the way of encoding stills and short segments (less than 60 frames)from CBR to VBR

onesoul

I just say something is not right, the log shows quality_prec: 24.96. It's not supposed to happen any convertion unless cce 2.5 or cce 2.70 is used.

From default setting of DVD-RB quality_prec 16 (at 0-64 scale), it gets converted depending on which version of CCE is used.

@ jdobbs

I noticed a terrible bug when using cce 2.70, 16 gets converted to 24.96 as shown above and cce 2.70 assumes 100!

DVD-RB should present rounded numbers, I suggest no convertion to be made, the best would be to the user choose any value depending on cce version.
Anyway converting 16 from 0-64 scale to 0-100 scale should give exactly 25.

Side note: As you know cce default vbr_bias is 30, I'd suggest using a bias of 40, maybe it would prevent vbv buffer underflows. And the less bitrate you have to encode the less variable bitrate compression curve you want if you aim to balanced quality. I got better results with bias 40 and actually the latest cce 2.70 gave the better results out of any version of cce (specifically at fading scenes and fast motion, I verified it on monsters inc at ~3100 kbps).

edit: On my tests I used notepad to replace all quality_prec of 24.96 to 25.

jdobbs
25th April 2005, 16:59
I didn't notice he was using 2.67...

Just for reference, the only difference between the two selections is the header that gets written. If you select "Trial" the header is the trial header, the regular is the retail version.

If he is using the retail version or eclcce then yes, it should be the normal CCE SP selection.

I noticed a terrible bug when using cce 2.70, 16 gets converted to 24.96 as shown above and cce 2.70 assumes 100! Bug?

Depending upon what version of CCE you are using that scale can be either 0-64 or 0-100. DVD-RB uses a constant scale of 0-64 so it will work with any version. Since v2.70 has gone back to the 0-100 scale, then 16 should be converted to 24. But I thought I'd taken them out.

The decimal places are ignored by CCE, by the way, so the value would be 24.

The conversion has to be made (and that won't change). The average user doesn't have any idea what this value even means -- do you really want them to have to set it?

I just went back to CCE v2.70 and looked. The default value is 25.

I don't know what method you use to convert from 0-64 scale to 0-100 scale but 16*100/64=25 :)

I just went back to CCE v2.70 and looked. The default value is 25. Sorry, default value of bias or quality_prec?

jdobbs
25th April 2005, 17:16
It only gets ignored when it's in the ECL file. I just rounded on the calculation. It is whatever you enter * 1.56. One point on the qual_prec scale of 0-100 isn't going to make a noticable difference..

onesoul
25th April 2005, 17:24
Ok, that doesn't make much difference but why not multiply it by 1.5625 to be accurate?

But back to Tube, if he is using cce 2.67 then shouldn't the value be 16 and not 24.96 or 25? (assuming that he didn't change the default setting)

jdobbs
25th April 2005, 19:05
@Onesoul

I just went through the code and found a mistake that was added for v2.70 support. I do a check against the version assuming i would always have it (e.g. "2.67.0.27, etc.)... unfortunately when ECLCCE is running, I am comparing against the value "ECLCCE" -- which compares to be higher... I'll fix that in DVD-RB v0.87. So version CCE version 2.67 is incorrectly being converted to the 0-100 scale.

Good catch. I guess I just had a hard time following... sometimes the synapses fire better than others.

Now with all that said. I don't think it relates to why he is getting the missing M2V, though... :D

Just got the 'missing M2V' error in the rebuild stage for first time using latest RB v87.

I ran the project as an OPV, movie only, w/ CCE 2.70. Funny thing is I ran the same project- same source, same method- through RB v86 just yesterday, and did not receive this error. Something changed in this version to kick it out...

edit: I could try the fix mentioned, but since it ran fine w/v86, I wanted to report this first.

Good lord,

Everything went smooth when running the PRO version. Thoose small 1 frame devils where copied as expected. One thing, on every re-encoded segment there's a warning in the rebuild phase that there's a missing frame :( , but after burning and running the DVD in the set top player no errors can be detected.

I'll guess I should have gone with the PRO version from start :)

jdobbs
27th April 2005, 17:31
On every segment? That really lowers my confidence in how I'm doing frame counting in the rebuild phase... I think I may need to pull that code out. Funny, though, with all the discs I've done I've never gotten that warning once.

Did you use any of the special features (like blanking or slideshow)?

Talking about Daggers?

I'm actually working with it right now. I was able to create ISO with DVD decrypter 3.5.4.0. Used DVD-RB .87a to do a "movie-only". 2 issues with it...1. Green subs (which I am redoing with .88). 2. first 5mins 25secs are blank (this is before "sony classics" appears). It comes up as chapter 1. I'm sure 2nd issue has nothing to do with DVD-RB.

Also, my DVD has the main movie in VTS11 not VTS12 and it's NTSC.

** - I have tried this with several versions of MPEG2Dec3dg.dll and DGDecode.dll as well, to no joy.

Problem Detail
==============

I essentially have the same problem with the 'Encoding resulted in no .M2V file' and then the abort. However, upon retrying the segment that fails, sometimes it'll work again. Sometimes it won't. Once I've had a full DVD encode but on the same settings others wouldn't do it. I've tried at high pass numbers and low pass numbers for CCE. I've tried with high and low VBR_Bias and high and low Quality_Prec. I've tried it with 'steal space from extras' mode on and off and at all levels. As I say, I've also tried the fix mentioned at the start of this thread. Guess that's what the 5-day doom9 cooling off period is for, hey... :D

Anyway, here's an example logfile. For the purposes of completeness, this was using CCE SP (Trial) 2.66.01.07. As I say I've used several other older and newer versions. All give the same problem. Careful, it's pretty big. I wasn't going to give up on this one ;)

I think that's what's known as a mess. Anyway, as you can see, there's a lot of missing frame errors too but it watches fine. Whether that's your checks or the actual frames that are off kilter I don't know. And as you can see, lots of instances of the missing m2v problem as well. I just kept clicking 'OK' to the 'Encoding resulted in no .M2V' error messageboxes and then hitting Encode again and resuming from where I'd left off.

Sorry for the enormous post, but I hope you appreciate the completeness ;)

Thanks in advance for anything you can do to help...

Cheers

Is there a possibility that you might be overclocking your computer? The fact that you are getting this on versions other than 2.70 makes me think that your system may not be stable. I know what you're thinking "But it works on other software!" -- but nothing else even comes close to the processor/memory strain that is used when Cinemacraft Encoder is running...

I'm not, no... good thinking though. CPU is running at basic FSB and multiplier, and the ram's running at normal speed as well. Hence my confusion. I would have expected CCE to not give me any problems given my specs.

I also forgot to mention, I did wonder whether it could be a cpu issue so I've tried it once or twice having shut all other programs down but to no avail.

What really gets me is that on my old machine (at far far lower specs) DVD-RB was working perfectly (albeit considerably slower). But the simple answer to your question is no, I'm not overclocking my pc :)

I should also mention that this is a fresh install of XP, done about 8 days ago.

This may or may not apply in your case. There's an easy way to test that your comp can handle the stress of encoders such as CCE or HC. Use the torture test in Prime95 (http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft.htm). Let it run for an hour or two, if it errors out you're in trouble. If you're bored you can watch your temps go up with SpeedFan (http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php) :)

I'm on it like a fat kid on a cupcake. Back later with the results. Or not if it destroys my machine.

*cranks cpu fan up to 7500rpm juust in case* :)

Hey guys,

This is my first post ever so please let me know if I am missing anything.

I have the complete 3rd season of 24 Hours.

Each DVD was crashing DVD-shrink. So I thought, ok I am going to give DVD-Rebuilder and CCE/HC a try.

Here are the two platforms I have tried :

Athlon 2500@3200, 512 MB RAM

Intel P4 3.0, 2 GB RAM

On both platforms this did not work (missing M2v files message):

- DVD Shrink 3.2 (unexpected error)

- DVDREbuilder Pro 0.92 + CCE SP 2.7.x (tried 2 different version of CCE SP 2.7)

- DVDRebuider Free (Several versions) + CCE SP 2.7.x/CCE SP 2.6X (again several different version of CCE)

On both platforms this works with some crashs. It crashed but the M2V file was created. Again this was repeated on both platforms.

- DVDRebuilder Pro 0.92 + CCE SP 2.50

On both platforms this works flawlessly

- DVDRebuilder Pro 0.92 + HC 0.14 (Best mode)

I believe but I am not 100% sure (it's hard to keep track of everything) that all crashes happened at the same place consistently.

Another DVD that was crashing DVD Shrink is "The Terminal". I used DVD-RB + HC successfully.

In the mean time, I did other backup with success using DVD Shrink.

Let me know if you want more information. Or if you want me to try something else.

Oh, I almost forgot, I ran CPU burn for a couple hours on the overclocked CPU without problem. I also did a memtest on the Athlon for over 12 hours (50 passes I believe) without a single error.

I did not test the P4. But it's not a overclocked machine.

I'd suggest you set the Athlon to its rated speed and try it with CCE and see if it works. Not completely sure what you mean by "crashes" but that's something that never happens. I'd even guess that Shrink may start working too.

zindine
21st May 2005, 01:43
I have been thinking about that too.

And by the way, I just ran Prime95 on the P4 and it failed.

I guess, I gotta get my computers straight.

Will post later if this was really the issue.

CCE SP 2.50 was actually crashing. "can't read memory address thingy"

I will be back with more information soon.

Whoah... that ain't good. CCE Version 2.50 is solid as a rock (except for that possible checksum error that can be disabled).

zindine
24th May 2005, 17:55
Jdobbs,

You were right. I tried on another computer with success, same software, same DVD.

So I have spent the whole week-end tweaking BIOS, Memory and what not and the other two computers (AMD Athlon 2500 and P4 3.0B).

Everything is working fine now.

So to anyone who is having the missing M2V file thing, try Prime for some time (the developper recommend at least 6 hours).

See if you pass that test, if you don't then you know you hardware is having some problems.

has anyone else had this error message when using hc encoder? all the threads i've searched on refer to a potential cce 2.70 problem.

i've just tried to encode The Day Today R2, which contains ANGLE or INTERLEAVING according to the rebuilder log, and i got the error at 99.3% of the encoding stage. this disk has a single VTS of 7554MB and it got as far as segment 155 (the last one of the set!). there is also a file in the D2AVS folder called VI0100008023.VOB.

on the "input statistics" line in hc 0.15 it counts down from 10 to 0 and says "ERROR, can not process AVS file". eventually dvdrb comes back with the "missing d2v file" message.

the AVS in question contains the following:-
trim(0,2071)
ConvertToYV12(interlaced=true)

9th July 2005, 18:39
the rebuilder.inf has the following for this segment:-

30th July 2005, 00:03
I've just tried The Day Today again with RC3 to see if the ILVU corrections solved this problem, but I got the same error described above.

I've noticed that the equivalent D2V for the very last segment is inconsistent with others that encode without a problem. At the end of a normal D2V I can see the end of the file looking something like this:-

7 0 2408448 8 5 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2
7 0 2648064 8 5 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 9

FINISHED

Howeve on my problem segment the D2V is missing the final '9' and FINISHED part:-

7 0 44386304 8 23 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2
7 0 44605440 8 23 2 2 2 2 2 2

Now I understand why the HC encoder is unable to process the file, but can anyone suggest why the D2V is not getting created correctly?

jdobbs
30th July 2005, 15:07
What happens when you try to open the AVS file directly with Windows Media Player?

Also, what happens if you add the "9" and the "FINISHED" manually to the file?

CCE writes the .vaf, then errors out on the second pass.
Opening the .avs with WMP Classic, and the file plays.
The m2v is not created.
It's a 22,000 frame clip.
Deleted the .vaf, no difference.

Have you tried to encode that segment using RME? Just a test... maybe the issue is on CCE!?!?

jdobbs
3rd August 2005, 01:01
Normally when you have these kinds of problems, it's a CCE issue (usually overclocking). The only exception I know of was when it was ILVU and it was the last M2V of a VTS, and that was fixed with RC4.

Not sure if this will help.. but here it is.

Playing the V01000900002003.avs file does show it to be the last part of the movie, as the end of it has credits.
I'm quite sure I used RC4 for this encode. Will try HC and see what happens.

winny
3rd August 2005, 09:18
RC4 has produced an identical D2V file as RC3 for the last ILVU segment, so I'll try the previous suggestion of manually completing the missing info and see what happens.

winny
3rd August 2005, 09:44
OK, I added 9 and FINISHED to the last entry in the file and it has encoded with HC. The M2V file plays back fine, and I'm just waiting for the rebuild step to complete.

jdobbs
3rd August 2005, 13:43
You're kidding? Are you sure you reaccomplished the PREPARE with RC4... I was positive that was fixed???

jdobbs
3rd August 2005, 13:45
@Sled_Dog

Is your D2V file missing the "9" and "Finished" as well?

Two steps forward and one step back... I'm starting to really appreciate why so many authoring packages don't support ILVU.

winny
3rd August 2005, 13:57
I ran the whole thing again through RC4 which deleted the contents of the work folder.

I wouldn't dream of winding you up over something like this :)

On a positive note, the rebuild phase finished without a hitch so you're extremely close.

FINISHED

Its not finished yet, and I gotta go to work.
Will know what happened when I get home..

Sled_Dog

Well, it finished with HC, seems to play ok with Power dvd.
I'll give CCE another go tonite, see what happens.

Sled_Dog
5th August 2005, 02:49
Tried CCE again, same results as the previous try.
Both D2v files end with a "9" and "Finished".
This was a part of a 3 movie batch, the other two finished fine.

winny
11th August 2005, 01:51
I've tried dvdrb rc4.1 with HC encoder and got the same error as before. However, I have also tried processing the same project using rejig (the speed is awesome for testing) and found this processes the D2V file without any problems!

I have no idea why HC appears to need the 9 and FINISHED to be present in the D2V, but I thought I'd better mention this latest finding to save jdobbs' sanity :)

Here's hoping someone with a bit of knowledge can help me understand what's going on.

Best wishes.

jdobbs
11th August 2005, 02:27
Actually it's not HC -- DGDECODE and AVISYNTH need it first... ReJig doesn't access the D2V file. In ReJig mode the original MPEG stream is demuxed and ReJig is run against it directly (ReJig is a transcoder).

@winny

So you are still getting a D2V that doesn't have the "9" and "FINISHED" at the end of the file?

Is it the last D2V of a VTS or last on the disc?

winny
18th August 2005, 18:48
Yes, the problematic D2V was the last on the disk. Sorry for the long delay, I see from the new changelog SDragoon has moved things along since your last request for info.

I tried rc5 late last night but had the runtime error 52. I see you've addressed this already! Unbelievable... when do you sleep?

I've just ran prepare with rc5.1 and the last D2V now contains 9 and Finished at the end. :D I'm equally excited and in awe, thanks so much. I'll let you know when this finishes encoding.

If you need any of the files for reference please let me know.

Best wishes.
