Can AviSynth detect the type of frame?

Is there a filter or an inbuilt function that will detect if the current frame is an I-frame or a P/B-frame?

Only of XviD. Lookup external plugin XStatImport from Sh0dan.

no way of doing this with mpg files, then? virtualdubmod seems to have no trouble identifying the frames, but I cant do any processing with that info.

Only source filters have access to that sort of information.

All other filters only deal with uncompressed video frames.
