Mplayer and alsa

I cant get mplayer to compile with alsa support. I have alsa support in my system. I use alsa for VLC but when I run configure ( for mplayer I get

I'm using ubuntu and I've tried to install almost every package that has alsa in the name, that isn't connected to a sertain program.

If you are running esd then there is no need to compile alsa support into mplayer, since mplayer will talk to esd anyway, and esd is responsible for talking to the right soundcard driver. I believe the noise you get from playing the vob is because of the DTS audio stream, not the lack of alsa support in mplayer. I don't know much more about DTS, I just remember getting garbage when trying to transcode some DTS streams a while back. Try playing something else (e.g. an mp3 file) to see if audio is working properly with the esd output.
If however you still want to have direct alsa output for some reason, then you should install the 'alsa-headers' package (that works for me in Debian). I don't know if there is such a package in the Ubuntu cd but there ought to be something like that in one of the online repositories. Bare in mind that you will have to stop the esd sound server to use -ao alsa.

Yes, the problem was the dts :o I installed libdts and problem was solved,

I finaly found the right package for alsasupport, libasound2-dev. No alsa in that name, that's why I didn't find it before. Alsa-headers is a dummypackage in ubuntu, but it's description mentioned libasound2-dev.
