View Full Version : Understanding Bitrate viewer scan of DVDRB build

I did a "3 scan" build thru DVDRB, and I ran the same movie thru DVD Shrink. After they were done, I ran Bitrate Viewer on the same .vob file from both builds. Below are the results:
Shrink: Peak Bitrate= 7882 ; Average Bitrate= 5232
Peak Q'= 9.12 ; Average Q'= 6.06
CCE & DVDRB: Peak Bitrate= 9007 ; Average Bitrate= 5115
Peak Q'= 8.66 ; Average Q'= 5.95
Could someone give me their opinion (from above info.) on which one was the better quality? I'm trying to figure out at what point to NOT use Shrink and instead use DVDRB&CCE.
Also, which do you think would be better? A backup done in Shrink at 76%(that gives you an idea of it's size or the same DVD backed up in DVDRB?
Thanks

from the bitrates id say cce is better.
The average bitrates show little difference, but in the high motion scenes the significant different in the max i believe will come through.
also, to make the test true, did you make so to set the menus in cce to no compression?

The one that looks the best to you :(
Don't worry about the numbers and believe your eyes, if one looks better to you then thats the one to use.... if you can't tell the diff between them and I tell you this one is the best in the world but you can't see the difference...then does it matter

I'm actually trying to get a grasp of bitrate and how to interpret these numbers. For example, jptheripper's statement about the average bitrate showing little difference, etc..

Yep you're exactly right. However, I think I have some pretty forgiving eyes when I compare what I see to the numbers. Just don't want to be satisfied with it now, but later when playing on a better/bigger tv see that it wasn't as good as I thought.
But what I meant by the statement you quoted is that I'm trying to get an idea of what's average, good, bad, etc.. so that when I read some of these posts here at doom9.org... I will half way understand some of the data info. posted. Also trying to figure out what types of scenes, colors, and other things are good for viewing to test out the quality.(with eyes)
Thanks

You're going to have a very hard time making comparisons at those kinds of bitrates. When you have 5Mbs+ encodes, even terrible encoders/transcoders do well... The challenges are in the 3.5Mbs and below territories...
