hi,i would like to use my own calculated bitrate.how do you force rb to use it or is it done in the encoder.im using cce 2.70.2 and the latest free rb.ive tried using rb-opt,but it keeps changing the bitrate on me.any advise would be helpful, thanks.

rb-opt is the only way, just use the slider to set bitrate. Remember, the bitrate is a function of the other cells and the space available. If you set the bitrate higher for a cell it must lower it elsewhere to make space.

hi jptheripper, ive tried using the rb-opt.went into global settings and adjusted the bitrate.it came up as an over size disk.not sure if i did something wrong.given it another try.

So, your goal is to increase the overall bitrate? There are .ini settings (see Settings thread) to change the output target size. It sounds like you were using rbopt to change cell bitrates. Unless you lock each cell and adjust them independently, that won't work. However, rbopt has a global setting that allows you to adjust the target size in the same way the .ini setting does.

hello mrslacker, thanks for your reply.yes i am using rb-opt or trying to any way.if i put a target size in my rb ini, will it work on all my back ups or do i change per project.also do i still use rb in 1 pass vbr or just select cce to 2 pass mode.would the quality be the same as a 4 pass cce.
thanks

The hidden ini settings are global. The encoding method has no bearing.

so if i use global settings and adjust the target to 2267500,that would be all i have to do.

1 pass is not accurate for file size, do a 2 or 3 pass cee with rb-opt set to 4484 and see how close youcan get.

Good call jptheripper. 1 pass vbr inaccurate? very. but RB is fairly conservative. I suppose it would be practical to derive separate (but less conservative than default) target sector values for each encoding mode.

I just want to interject a warning here. I would be very careful in changing the calculated bitrates. You can't make an intelligent decision on the quality of output based just upon bitrate. There are sections of sources in which 500Kbs is more than enough -- and others in which 7Mbs is barely enough. DVD-RB does extensive analysis of the original source in order to allocate the available bits across the segments. In most cases unless someone is very familiar with the source -- changing the bitrates will do more harm than good.
Also, changing bitrates on OPV does nothing beyond setting an upper and lower limit -- the bitrate changes in the encode in order get to the constant Q...

I don't think its a good idea to change cell bitrates independently either. I only advocate adjusting the target sectors, and letting DVD-RB make the decisions. Just don't be surprised if you get an oversized disc here and there.
Once I had a disc with some extras in the main VTS, so I manually (recklessly) lowered their bitrates with rbopt... it was absolute garbage. 3Mbps just didn't cut it. I could see every block!

ok,i have change the target sector in the rb ini to 2249500 and set cce to 4 passes.my final encode came out to 4.35 gb.
thank you very much mrslacker , jptheripper and jdobbs for all your help.i was pulling my hair out for 5 weeks trying to understand this.
