Change aspect ratio on .avi file

What's the easiest way to change the aspect ratio on an .avi file? I normally use the pan&scan functions on Media Player Classic to make the necessary corrections, but when I archive, it would be nice to have it just be right the first time. I would prefer to just change a few bytes in a hex editor, rather than going thruogh Virtualdub, but any techniques short of reencoding would be appreciated.
