View Full Version : Normal channel ordering to make 5.1 AAC

Normal for OGG and AC3:
FL.wav
C.wav
FR.wav
SL.wav
SR.wav
LFE.wav
Normal for 6chwav/6chaiff:
FL.wav
FR.wav
C.wav
LFE.wav
SL.wav
SR.wav
What channel ordering is normal for AAC (making with BeLight, BeSweet)?

Ok, I've decoded Dolby Digital 5.1 audio of Terminator 2 to six waves with BeLight. The file is 448 Kbps. The setting was:
Azid - Dynamic Compression :: Normal
LFE to LR channels -3db.
Normalize to 100%.
Then I've streched every wave with Cool Edit Pro 2.1.
Then I've encoded waves to AAC 5.1 with BeLight. The file is 173 Kbps. Settings was:
Dynamic Compression :: Normal
HE-AAC
High Quality
VBR :: Streaming quality
The AAC 5.1 has less volume than Dolby Digital original. And I think the channels ordering are not normal (AAC sounds different).
What I did wrong?

Guys, please help. I really want to learn how to do encoding correctly, but I'm noob with 5.1 AAC and BeLight/BeSweet. :(

In BeLight I've found Mode: What I should set? PreGain or PostGain?
Are my other settings right?
PS: I've searched forum already few days and read interesting discussions, but I didn't find discussion of such problem...

You do this when you convert AC3 to six waves? Or when you convert six waves to 5.1 AAC?
Also, when you do Gain. And what do you do - PreGain or PostGain.
What about Azid Dynamic Compression (when you convert from AC3 and when you convert to 5.1 AAC)?
What about LFE to LR - 3db? Should I turn this setting on? When (when I convert to six waves or when I convert to AAC)?
Should I turn on Output Mode (mono, stereo, dpl, dplii)?

What about Azid Dynamic Compression (when you convert from AC3 and when you convert to 5.1 AAC)? You might want to give Foobar2000 a try... as it's able convert 6Ch AC3 directly to 6Ch AAC (LC or HE). Plus it offers various third party tools!
Cheers

this has been discussed that often already, i think there are even doom9 guides on this process
btw azid is a ac3 decoder, it isnt used when doing wav->aac

I've found guide about AACMachine.
So, my last question is about "Output Mode". Should I use this? What settings will be right for 5.1 AC3? dpl or dplii?

I still get 5.1 AAC with very low volume. :(

aacmachine uses the psytel aac encoder, which doesnt produce a correct output for multichannel streams (wrong channel order)
if you dont find the setting normalize 90% you can also set pregain to 10db

Is PreGain better than PostGain?

Ok. Thanks, volume si better now.
Could you answer for another questions?
If I use PreGain - do I need check "Nomralize" checkbox (BeLight)? Is PreGain is the same as Normalize?
Also, how I can set pregain to 5db or 10 db (for example) with BeLight. I can't find such option... Should I enter something to command line to use this option?

Please...:search: Brother John has made a command lines reference guide. You could find your answer in this paper.

at least thats how i understood it :D

Last question (maybe little stupid question). Just to be sure - is BeSweet GUI 0.7 uses same channel order as BeLight?

AlexeyS,
Converting 6Ch AC3 to 6Ch AAC (or even 2Ch AAC) is really very successful using Foobar2000.
If you want to give it a try PM me and I'll be happy to provide you some installation instructions and plug-ins.
Cheers

Yes.
btw, BeLight has some presets for AAC transcoding. Why don't you try them ?

Never saw any presets.
Do you mean "Normal", "Streaming" etc? I use them. :)
