Hi, I am new to Linux and recently installed Gentoo successfully (after about 3 tries :P )
I am used to ripping DVD's using DVDDecrypter, AVI Synth, CCE, DVDMaestro/Scenarist, pulldown and a couple others.
I have already ran into problems using wine. When I use FTP apps (tried 2 so far), wine loads but doesnt launch them. When I use mIRC, it sometimes crashes. I am wondering if it is going to do the same thing with the apps I mentionned above... because I definitely dont want CCE going down after 3-5 hours of semi-complete encoding.
No need to help with dvd decrypter ill use the guide posted here if I'm told that the other programs will work.
Thanks a lot!

Wine's pretty buggy at times, you may want to look at native programs instead. For ftp try gftp, kftpgrabber, or a host of other programs. For IRC there is gaim, bitchx, xchat, and many other programs.
For DVD ripping check out the stickies in the forum, there are a lot of good native apps. You might want to try dvd::rip or something similar.

yes I have emerged xchat and tried using it, but I have lots of very useful mIRC scripts that I would have liked to use (an yeah im used to the interface too i guess). Same thing for FTP programs, I have a list of my FTP's that I use a lot.
thanks for the FTP apps name though, I'll defnitely be looking into those. Do you have any experience with PFTP by any chance? I heard it was good.

If you are not bothered by using console text mode (like me), i can tell you that i have been using pftp constantly over the last 4 years, and it's definitely a VERY powerful tool.

If you're looking for something for usenet, Pan is the best. BNR2 (binary news reaper) is also good.
I use Total Commander in WINE all the time. That's a great file manager with support for ftp. You might try it sometime.
For ripping DVDs, I use dvd::rip. You can get that via yum or apt from FreshRPMS or Dag Wieers under the package name perl-Video-DVDRip. Just "yum install perl-Video-DVDRip" and it'll make sure you have all the dependencies as well.

Can you use yum and rpms in Gentoo? People use to recommend using emerge to Gentoo users. ;)

Details, details. :) I'm sure there's an equivalent Gentoo emerge that takes care of dvd::rip. I just don't know what it is since I don't use Gentoo. :D

Yes, I have found the tool a couple days ago.. been trying to set it up and got help froma friend who uses it, but I'm stuck with a problem... if you can IM, my msn is jmlamontagne@gmail.com, AIM is Jim14Qc that'd be the best probably otherwise here's a summayr of my problem: I have the autoconnecter setup on my remote shell, and PFTP works fine to connect to site but when the autoconnecter is started (it tells me all the masks ive setup and then "waiting for release" or something similar), I go in mIRC and use the sockudp command, but it doesn't do anything on the shell.. yes, i setup the password and the shell ip and port and i put rls var at the end.. Also, if I try to use PFTP on my home computer to test if the script works, well I can,t test it reallyb ecause PFTP cant connect to sites (I have the exact same setup as from the shell), it says "PORT command" "Bailing out". It's definitely not a addip error or something similar. One last thing, does PFTP send and refresh (like ultra or rush for exemple)? AKA can i send a rls that is not full and it keeps sending and refreshing untill source is full so that target can be finished too???
THANKS A LOT!
