View Full Version : double encode...FU then Divx4?

In my experience, I haven't found any
auto IVTC programs (AVS GreedyHMA, AVS IVTC, Tmpgenc)
that beats FairUse. (I may be doing something wrong of course)

However, FU only does divx3, and 2-pass divx4 does seem
to produce better quality at smaller sizes.

Is it brain dead/silly to:

1) encode using FU and very very high bitrate
(gain benefit of really good IVTC)
2) Then reencode again in Virtualdub to 2-pass divx4 using
aggressively lower bitrate?

Any comments welcome. Thanks!

would'nt do that.
converting divx to divx will allways degrade the quality of the video considebritly (dont know how that word is spelled).

So is there any Fair-Use type equivalent in Divx 4??

And while we're on the topic, when the heck is a new, faster, optimized Fair Use gonna come out?

The most obvious answer to your question would be Gordian Knot. It's a little complex at first (at least for newbies) but it gets great results and once you've got it down you'll have no trouble encoding movies at all. Just use Doom9's guides - they're a real help and I think that they're underutilized by casual rippers. So take the time and read them!

I am a gordian knot user my self.
but my opinion on fair use is that the author (FU2K) is just genial.
because if you look at every other encoder you have alot of programs that you have to use that many ppl have created.
but Fu2k is doing all by him self so he has my respect to 100%.
the only thing he hasent created by him self is the divx codec and no one is actually done that either that has released a program for the encoding comunity.
and about the optimization that is something you have to ask him self I guess.

.. i cant agree, at least not if you are aiming for a 1 CD rip ( bitrates < 900 kbps ) in the end. Try to encode directly from DVD and from another encoded AVI done from the same source in '1 pass quality based' with quality setting 100% ( = quantizer of 2 ) before, but dont do resizing on this one, just cropping !!. I am calling these 'AVI Masters' and i created and stored a few of those from important movies i used fo experimenting and testing new settings, so i didnt need to leave the VOBs on the HDD, in average 4 - 6 CDs per movie.

With some probability the encode from the encode ( being same resolution as DVD, i.e. 704 or 720 * xxx !! ) will even look better than being ripped from the DVD, because the 1st encoding made some kind of prefiltering very similar to what we do with temp smoother ....

BTW, Win2000 and NTFS file system are required here, as your AVI from encode nr.1 will very likely be bigger than 2 GB, even without sound ....
