View Full Version : .divx playback?

I never have any problem with playing video files encoded with divx, but usually their extension is .avi or something like that. I have a filename.divx file (it's the first one I've ever come across) and I can't play it at all. MPC says "cannot render file."

I'm a total noob and I don't understand the mpeg-4 format really or the faq to playback those files. I did a search and nobody's really asked this wuestion here yet, so I thought it'd be all right to ask.

How do I play this .divx filetype or convert it to something playable?

Rename *.divx to *.avi.

this did not work. MPC is still giving the "cannot render file" message.
Does this mean that the file is corrupt?

Open the file in Gspot or Avicodec (both free) and see what the specs are for the file so we can accurately see what type of file it actually is. You can also use Virtualdub mpeg2 (opens avi and mpeg files) and look at the video info.
ps newest version of Gspot will render tha video and allow you to view it within the program.

here's a screenshot of gspot

oh well it seems I can't post attatchments. hmm.. the attachment is there, but I don't see it anywhere on my post. oh well I'll type it out as best I can.

under container it says "filetype: unknown"
"mime type: unknown"

After clicking on the grey box, Under "proposed codec solutions and tests", it says
"rendering failed. Following is the error reported by Directshow:
0x80040265: Cannot play back the file. The format is not supported"

This is the only other info it's showing. All of the other boxes are blank.

@mackaroon
sure, u would get instant help in the divx forum. why not ask there ? (or simply read the info there ;) ) '.divx' is hacked avi, so u need some special filter for playing back in a ds player other than the 'divx player'

.divx is an extension also used for raw mpeg-4 video streams (created by divx of course)

you might want to try importing it (after renaming to .m4v) to .mp4 with mp4box or mp4creator

Hmmm!

I guess it would b very remiss of me to ask how you came by this .divx encode? As it does not sound like you've encoded it yourself!

EDIT: That said.... DivX's very own DivX Player or DivX Fusion Player should be able to play the file.
