Irecently posted a seemingly innocent question about editing out commercials from a movie I taped off-air, thru rabbit ears. I was a bruptly shut down with a reference to 'rule 6' violation? You promote the use of commercial video decryption to allow the copy of commercial dvd's! I was just wondering just how I might have crossed the line.

I wish to edit, just to learn how to edit. My family was killed before I could make many 'home movies' that just might not be considered copyright infrinegemnt, should I have editied them.

Can't understand how I violated any laws. I have nevr made an illegal copy of anything! I have successfully decrypted, and burned a couple commercial movies, which have since been erased. I wish to learn, not to steal.

I will not be posting such illegal info requests in the future. I will certainly keep reading the helpful comments and suggestions from other forum members, but I seriously doubt Iwill be posting'

I am a home bound, diabled VietNam vet with no life of my own, so I use my computer to keep me interested in anything at all. This is why I like to try and learn.... and keep interested...

I have a few downloaded tv movies on DVD. Now, I would like to tinker around editing out the commercials.
Doesn't sound like movies you "taped off-air".

Wrong 'The Beast.' The one I have is William Peterson about a giant squid I taped off SciFi before I had to disconnect my cable. The SciFi site makes no mention of a commercial version. That is why I was kinda interested in editing out the commercials, before I found it was apparently illegal?!

Future hint -- nobody cares to hear where you got your video, and it obviously adds nothing to the question. Just describe the type of video and ask the question -- that way you'll get answers and won't be (either potentially or directly) violating any rules.

My view of copyright issues is that it's between you and the copyright holder, unless/until you choose to make it public on a forum like this. The ops here always err on the side of caution, for very good reasons. Nothing personal about it, it just helps protect the forum.

What was IP theft was downloading a copy someone else recorded and placed on the Internet. Recording a broadcast you receive yourself, for the purpose of timeshifting (watching later), is legal in the US where you live:The Sony/Betamax decision was decided on January 17, 1984 by the supreme court. It states: "Sale of home videotape recorded held not to constitute contributory infringement of television program copyrights. It was held that the sale of home video tape recorders to the general public did not constitute contributory infringement of copyrights on television programs since there was a significant likelihood that substantial numbers of copyright holders who license their works for broadcast on free [or cable] television would not object to having their broadcasts time-shifted by private viewers and the plaintiff copyright holders did not demonstrate time-shifting would cause any likelihood of non-minimal harm to the potential market for, or the value of, copyrighted works." (Guide to American Law, volume 3, 1983 p 46-7)One IP attorney/member here (Adam) stated that recording a broadcast for archival purposes was not decided in the 1984 Sony case. See his discussion in the midst of a copyright thread, starting here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&postid=587481#post587481).
