View Full Version : Sound stopped working
After I installed AutoGK it seems that although the sound on my XP based system still makes system sounds, it won't play .avi's - well it plays picture only. Does anyone have any idea of why this might be?
TIA,
rt

From the AutoGK FAQ (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=72679):
2.12 I can't hear audio when playing final AVI. Why?
- if it's AC3/DTS sound track then you need latest AC3Filter or ffdshow to decode it. AutoGK installer doesn't have those filters.
This may not be your problem, but it's a good place to start.

The program AVICodec can open an avi and tell you what codecs are necessary to play it, if you have the correct codecs installed, then it's another issue entirely, especially if you could play them fine before.
This software can be found on www.free-codecs.com if you are interested. I've found it pretty helpful as it displays all the codecs and filters on your system as well.
Thanks for the replies above. I used GSpot to find which codecs are installed and used. I noticed that the audio codec being used was a Nero product. (I had also installed Nero burner). I tried installing the rest of the Nero products (Media Player, Vision Express etc.) and now sound is back - regardless of the player I use.
Strange! PS I had done reboots etc. with no success.
Thanks again.

Congratulations on finding your fix, and also on "punching the trouble ticket". It's important for Noobs that may run across a thread in the future to have feedback that points to a solution. You'll also be remembered for practicing good forum protocol, which is always a good thing. :)
Paulcat--Good heads up. I've always used GSpot as a codec identifier, but have heard a lot of nice buzz on AVIcodec. Hang out and lend a hand more often!
