Hey all!

I have a custom built PC, athlon 64 3200 with 1gig of pc3200 ultra memory and a 120 gig sata 7200RPM hd and a geforce 6600gt AGP video card.

I currently use dvd shirnk and dvd decryptor to copy movies.

My friend has the exact same computer as me but its a athlon 64 3000, same mem, same hd (not sata though) and same graphics card.

Its not a huge deal but I would like to know the answer if possible. He uses dvd shrink as well but not dvd decryptor. During the process of dvd shirnk (specifically the encoding process, it takes him 6-8 minutes to encode the dvd, but it takes me 10-12 minutes?

He rips the dvd from dvd shirnk and it creates the VBO audio and video files to his harddrive, then he takes them and burns them with nero.

I use dvd decryptor to rip to harddrive and open in dvd shirnk and then compress then burn with nero.

**I know the ripping part and burning part mostly depending on the dvd burner I have, but thats not where the mystery lies, its only during the "compression" or dvd shrink labels is as "Encoding" process that im curious about.

I just install nvidia's dvd decoder and that seems to have helped in other areas.

Why does it take him half the time to "compress" "encode" then me even though i have a faster computer?

I even tried using dvd shrink only but it actually takes longer, like 20-25 mins.

Does it have to do with the codec i have installed.

I just got the 6600gt video card, i had a geforce 5500 before, (nothing special) and he was/is still using the 6600gt, so i got the 6600gt for better game play and I also thought it would speed up the encoding/compression process in dvd shrink because at the time my friend and I had the same EXACT computer but he had the 6600gt, after I got it, its a little faster then the 5500 but nothing like 6-8 minutes on the compressoin.

THe 6600 has a built in video processor or decoder or something, here are some specs on it:

http://nvidia.com/page/purevideo.html

http://nvidia.com/page/pg_20040809885583.html

Whould/Should any of these features speed up the process?

We are both running win XP pro SP2

I think it might be the codec pack we have installed but in not sure, would anyone recommend a good one?

I am also using the dvd decoder from ndivia which seems to be pretty good. I was using the decoder from cyberlink (PowerDVD) and it seemed to not be as good as nvidia.

Would anyone be able to shed some light on this mystery?

Thanks,

LS

WOW on your first post!!!
.
First, to answer your thread question "would geforce 6600gt video card speed up encoding/decoding process" NO!
The info is passing from your rom->cpu->hdd. It never passes thru your card, if you were capturing video it would (vhs, tuner, etc).
.
Second, you don't have the same system as your friend. You have sata hdd, he has ide, so im going to assume you have diff mobo's.
Do you both have the same burners, same firmware?
.
Third, (reading post over, I realize you just answered own Q)

He rips the dvd from dvd shirnk and it creates the VBO audio and video files to his harddrive, then he takes them and burns them with nero.
I use dvd decryptor to rip to harddrive and open in dvd shirnk and then compress then burn with nero.
Your friends data path, rom(read)->cpu(compression)->hdd(write)
Your data path, rom(read)->cpu->hdd(write)->dvdshrink->hdd(read)->cpu(compress)->hdd(write)
.
To sum it up your friends (shrink process) reads from rom and writes to hdd, in your process you read and write to your hdd at the same time which = more time.
.
If you want to speed things up do what your friend does, or add a second hdd and read from 1 and write to the other.

Thanks for the reply!

We have different burners..

Would you mind explaining the read write process to me?

So reading means, ripping or whats in memory? and writing is when the VBO files are writing to the HDD?

So if I get a 2nd hdd and set dvd decryptor to write to that and then in dvd shrink to pull from that then it would speed up the encoding process?

I have a sata and an IDE hdd, the sata is in there right now...my mobo has 2 sata and 2 ide's If i connect the IDE to the IDe controller would that hurt anything?

So I would have a sata hd connected to a sata connection and a IDE hd to a IDE connection. I dont have 2 sata drives..

Would you also explain in little more what compoents are invovled in the reading (rom) and the writing (hd) process? I think i already know, but i just want to make sure.

Thanks again,

Lenny
