For all those looking for a GUI to use with Mencoder, this one is quite good.
http://mewig.sourceforge.net/
It is under development, but at the moment there is no support for x264 or snow. :(
I did email the author about adding support for x264 and he/she did say it would be included in the future...
If anyone can write some C# perhaps they coule help include it!???
Cheers (and hoping...)

thats indeed a great idea (actually someone else was writing too on a mencoder gui, but its not ready till now).
i think a mencoder gui will surely give x264 and snow a boost and it would also ensure easier support for latest/future technologies than vfw and platform independance imho :)
i wrote a feature request here (http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=1203809&forum_id=410331) (if someone wants to join me ;) )

Does someone have any experiences in the quality of this tool? Can I compare it with Xvid?
I also would like to use some Avisynth Filters with mencoder, but I donīt see any possibilty with this GUI

The arguements about quality are best answered by you trying things out for yourself, but in terms of what mencoder (and mplayer) does, have a search around the forum or a look on http://www.mplayerhq.hu/
Mewig is simply a GUI for mencoder that outputs a batch file for you to run to do an encoding job. It has a few other features such as auto crop aswell.
Mencoder uses the libavcodec libs and some others too. The quality in my opinion is fine, but then I mainly use it for compressing TV captures.

It can also encode with XviD, although this GUI doesn't seem to offer the option.
edit: It does.

Just thought some people might like to see some of the GUI options: -

That looks like an older version.
The one I have also does detect boarders and has pretty good XviD support too. :)
