View Full Version : Is my DVD burn speed average, or could it be better?

I have a NEC 16x dual layer DVD burner and was wondering what is the norm speed when it comes to burning DVDs and/or having a more expensive burner will allow greater average speeds.

I've read that to get the best possible score, you must test an unencrypted DVD. So I pulled out my wedding video, (to my knowledge it's unencypted) and tested the burn speed on Nero. The process took roughly 10-15mins and after it was done, the "average" speed rating was listed at 11.43x with a "maximum" burn speed listed at 15.16x. Is this a good speed, average, or below average speed?

While the test was taking place, my speed rate (the green line as I recall) was going at a steady rate up and to the right on the graph in Nero. However, as it approached the very end of reading, it took 3 dips, but bounced back to continue on its course upward and to the right.

did you do a direct copy from another dvd?

this is not the ideal way to test burning speed. it would be way better if you first made an iso copy to a hard disk of yours, preferably on the other ide channel and burn from there....

well the DVD I used was made from copying media from a VHS. So in fact, the test DVD was just simply a copied DVD.

Can I use any DVD moive to test as long as I make an ISO file and copy it to my hard disk and burn from there?

When using Nero I was under the impression you had to have an actual DVD in the burner to test speeds. Does it matter if you use DVD Decrypter or Nero, or is Nero the only program to test burn speeds using the ISO file?

no dvddecrypter will work just as well!...

So, do more expensive DVD burners yeild higher burn speeds or are they all the same??

well no they are not all the same, but i wouldn't say that more expensive automatically means faster...

Not a lot of media are actually suitable to be burnt at 16x ... depends on the combination of burner, firmware revision and recordable medium. what you describe is quite OK ... personally I wouldn't try to burn faster than 8x.
