Hello,

Has any one ever used the encoder part of FFDSHOW in order to encode mpeg2 to ultimately create a DVD?

I have a lot of difficulty to find any information on even how to use this encoter.

Could you please direct me to a source of information.

Thank you kindly

Hi!
I use ffdshow to make my SVCD's on a regular basis (it's the only encoder I used -without counting tests- for almost a year). I preffer it over QuEnc because it let me make any setting I want and I can use it to record in real time with my card's capture program.

But I never made a DVD. I know from other's experience that (like other libavcodec based encoders) ffdshow has problems keeping bitrate in DVD compliant limits. But in my usage I didn't encounter problems (I use low bitrates and my player is very forgiving).

As for source of information, I don't know, beside the included help (which is very brief and incomplete, as you maybe already saw) I recommend to read ffmpeg's manual or the mplayer/mencoder manual (http://www.mplayerhq.hu) to get accustomed with the terms and internal logic of libavcodec mpeg2 encoder. At least this is what I did to compensate the lack of a detailed manual. Anyway, you have to make a lot of deductions and tests since these manuals are very laconic too.

Maybe some other forum members can give you more information.

Good luck!

P.S. What did you try to do untill now and where did you stopped?

Thanks a lot fot taking the time to answer my question. I deaply appreciate it!

What I have done so far is to create a mpeg stream using GraphEdit and the ffdshow encoder to create a mpeg2 stream. I am able to playback the stream perfectly well in a variaty of player. However, When I tray to create a DVD using the TMPGEnc DVD Author, it tell me that my stream is not compliant to DVD standards.

By the way, do you know a better way to use this encoder than to use the ackward graphedit?

Do you know if I could use it un VirtualDub? I have tryed without success.

Thank you again !

U can use it in virtualdub, if u install a never version and donīt miss to click on the virtualdbu vfw plugin. Once installed, u have another codec which u can select in vd. When saving a file, just click on the "output" tag and de-select "save to avi". Select "store frames to external file" and "raw frames". Then give a output location where to store the mpeg2-file. If u save everything now, there will be a dummy avi-file and a seperate mpeg2-file. works very nice :)
