View Full Version : List your favorite freeware video apps...

List your favorite freeware video apps (out of the ones you've tried, of course) in descending order starting with #1 -- you can do top 5, top 10, top 20, whatever. Put the reasons why (power, utility, flexibility, etc) after each program.

Also (if you like), list some non-free apps you use regularly, and what you like/dislike about them.

Note -- don't include codecs or plugins, just programs. Unless you want to, that is :D.

Freeware:

#1: AVISynth (IMO this program should be selling on the pro market in the upper half of 3-figure $$$, yet it's free!).

#2: DVD Decrypter (flexible, very useful, non-buggy, updated regularly).

#3: DVD Shrink (extremely useful, excellent picture quality, surprisingly flexible, very low level of bugs).

#4: DMPGDec/DVD2AVI (without this one we'd be somewhat lost as a community, this is so useful in so many ways).

#5: VirtualDub and derivatives (useful, flexible)

#6: Gordian Knot/AutoGK (makes things easier for all of us. Because AutoGK runs fine when the adware is removed, I still consider it a freeware).

#7: IFOEdit -- very many uses, actually forces you to learn something about reauthoring before doing it ;).

#8: Media Player Classic/BSPlayer (tied). MPC wins on "built in everything," and BSPlayer wins for its superb resize algorithm and interesting interface.

#9: GSpot (very useful to tell a lot about encoded movies, there's little else like it anywhere).

#10: DVD Identifier / Nero CD-DVD speed (tied) -- useful in many ways.

Commercial Apps

* TMPGEnc DVD Author -- very easy to use, almost simplistic for beginners, remarkably bug-free (all apps should be that free of bugs).

* TMPGEnc -- annoyingly slow, but overall it works well and offers a lot of options.

* Ulead DVD Player -- I like it better than PowerDVD... picture quality is better, directshow filters are better. PowerDVD only has the advantage in many sound plugins (for the right price).

* Nero 6 Ultra Edition -- aside from a few useful elements, this suite is almost embarrassing. Lots of bloat, bugs, and useless programs, with a few very useful ones scattered around. Why not get rid of the detritus and just sell the good ones? Burning ROM + Express, Recode, toolkit, maybe InCD... get rid of the rest. And for god's sake, work on fixing bugs before adding more features.

Rule 12: Do not ask what's best!

fewtch
8th March 2005, 22:23
List what you feel are the best freeware video apps...

This post is asking for people's opinions, and I only started it for the benefit of everyone so they can try other people's favorites (in case they haven't already), and maybe discover some excellent proggies they weren't too familiar with. I thought that would be obvious, but I guess not...

If the mods are too pedantic about the word "best," I can go back and change all occurrences to "favorite" -- would that help?

Edit -- done.

fewtch, you agreed to follow the forum rules. If you don't want to do that, you can take yourself elsewhere. And be careful about accusing me of pedanticism, because you're veering towards a rule 4 strike. I'm just carrying out my duties, which include enforcing our forum rules.

I think thats silly.
This is not a typical "DivX/Xvid...whats best???"-thread, and thats what rule 12 is there for.

1] Very useful thread for some ppl.

2] fewtch, must agree with the mod, its their duty to enforce the rule, though in this case, neuron2 might have misunderstood your threads real purpose, i dont think its a "whats the best". but in all fairness we have to respect their authority in the matter.

3] Dont hurt me :(

I think it is a "what's best" thread. So I completely understand his reasoning.

Also, I'm not sure of it's usefulness, because we all probably agree that apps such as AviSynth and DVD Decrypter are in the top 10 when it comes to video.

I'd much rather see other such lists...Perhaps a list of apps that certain people find indispensable but others may not have heard of, etc.

Perhaps the thread should be closed.

Too bad I would like that thread to continue :)

I do not see anything wrong with this thread. There's no word "best" in the original post. Just a man asks to share opinions about one's favourite soft. It might be useful to see what people want from a pc and how they use it.

1. Windows Media Player 6.4
2. RealProducer 8.5 Basic (excellent quality for very low bitrates) to send clips to my collegues and family when I'm abroad
3. Nero CD DAE + Exact Audio Copy (with ATRAC3 ACM codec) for music library
4. DVD Decrypter + AutoGK/GK for movie library
5. VirtualDub for video processing
6. TMPGEnc for transcoding .ASF and .MOV (new movies' teasers) to .AVI
7. Sonic Foundry ACID Xpress

CD Burner: NTI CD-Maker
Codecs: DivX 3.11, DivX 5.0.5 Pro, RealMedia 8, Sony ATRAC3 ACM, huffyuv

The original post was edited by the poster to remove the offending "best" terminology.
