I am ripping my DVDs to set up a dvd server to stream them to the entertainment system. Just hoping for some feedback on the best ways to do this.

Server software
Entertainment software: XBMC, mythTV, ect...
how to store ripped movies (preserving most of dvd structure and staying with MPEG2)
how to associate meta data

I would not say that. I and others might have just missed the thread.

I am in the process of re-doing my HTPC. I have used all sorts of Linux distros for it in the past. And I even once used Windows. But this time I think I am going with gentoo. I have a nice 128GB HD to pop in it and I have already started encoding a few DVDs for it in X264. I am averaging 300~400MB for a 2 hour movie very good quality.

I don't want and can't use TV tuning capabilities with our digital cable box. But I would still like to use it for web browsing etc. Which is why I choose general Linux distros and then customize them to my own needs. Which more or less means installing videolan on them. :D It does just about everything. Including allow to control it wirelessly from my laptop or any system in the house. I also use the system for emulated console games etc which works well as it has more power than an Xbox. ;)

Thanks, I plan to keep original DVD rips ifos/vobs. Any way to associate metadata? Best way to download metadata automatically (and ideally free)?
