View Full Version : tricky avi to dvd question
hi guys! i'm new so please throw me a bone if you know the answer to my dilema.
ok first off, i followed this avi2svcd guide nearly to a tee...
www.doom9.org/mpg/dvd2svcd-avi.htm
and after conversion, i don't see a cue/bin/img or iso file, the nearest thing (size-wise) is an mpv file.
i installed avi2svcd v1.2.2 build3, cce sp, tmpg, gspot and nandub. i also have nero and dvd decrypter. i joined my avi's with avi mux, and selected avi as input and dvd as output under 'misc.' in avi2svcd. next i loaded my newly joined avi and went to the 'conversion' tab and chose 16:9 under 'aspect ratio' (i determined my ratio using gspot), i then configured avi2svcd as the guide suggested, however, my version of avi2svcd is a bit different from the version used to create the guide, but i used careful judgment... i created an output folder with the title of the movie (ALL files go here), i checked the 'Do not convert audio (use source audio)' box. next under 'bitrate', i chose 9000 max and dvd-r 4464 as my cd size, and chose tmpg under the 'encoder' tab. NOW, here's where i think i might have screwed up, under the 'multiplexor' tab there is a drop-down menu for the advanced settings, the field says '(bbMPEG Output Settings)', i clicked it and there was a pop-up box with many options, and a warning at the bottom that reads:
WARNING! You can seriously screw things up if you change
any of the values above. Don't say I didn't warn you!
although the default 'program stream type' was set to svcd, i switched it to dvd. i have no subtitles so i skipped that part, as well as 'chapters. so now ive configured avi2svcd so i went back to the guide which said to click 'go' to convert my avi to a 1discimage.dvd file (being roughtly 4.37 GB large) but i got a mpv file instead.
anyway, i hope someone can help.
btw, i'm very impressed with the work that went into this site, the guides, and the awsome freeware apps available here, i had no idea how complex dvd ripping/burning could be until i found this site. you guys really know your stuff, keep up the good work and ty:D
oops, one last request, i'm going to need to also join and convert 2 .bin files for preperation to burn to dvd, can someone please point me to a guide for that.

Hello and welcome to the forum-
Yeah, you probably should have taken that bbMPEG warning to heart. The log file may have some information about where you went wrong. If you don't have an .mpg, or bin/cue, it looks as if it failed at the muxing stage. You should be able to pick up where you left off, using the Recover portion. Maybe go and set bbMPEG back to the original Default settings before recovering.
I don't really know the answer to the second question. What's inside the bin files? Open them up with ISOBuster or something similar.

The guide needs a bit of tweaking.
But a couple of things leap out.
Firstly - you have checked "use source audio". If the AVI file has non-compliant audio, this dooms the process to failure. This option was designed for AVI's with AC3 audio. VDubMod or GSpot will give you file information. If it ain't AC3 I suggest you UNcheck this and let DVD2SVCD convert the audio.
Secondly, if bbMPEG is being used to multiplex, you must have "Don't make images" selected in the DVD Image tab. Select DVD Author in this tab - this is the bundled freeware authoring engine. Your image file will actually have a .iso extension, not .dvd
Reconfigure as above and rerun. I wouldn't attempt recovery of this one. If it still fails, :logfile:

Thanks for the corrections, Nick. I forget that he won't get bin/cues whatever he does, since this is for DVD. And the screwup is most likely because of the audio, and not anything further down the line. Ignore what I said earlier. :)
thanx to both of you for replying! nick, you nailed it, i had 'select no images' checked instead of dvd author. i started rendering again and i now see a dvd folder with audio/video sub-folders;)
any idea how to join and convert .bin files to an iso, nick?

bin files are already iso files, just a little other file format...
hmmm, it looked like things were going well, but all i got was a .mpeg 2:18 seconds long. i noticed 'fixed chapters are 2 mins. long, ant the intro was 18 secs. so it appears i only converted 1 chapter.
here's what my log says:

i'm wondering if the spaces in the path to my file is corrupting the command-line functions...

Shouldn't do.
Could you post the contents of the DVD2SVCD logfile? It should give us more clues...
heres the log, but i think the spaces in the command line are causing this, i've encountered this type of think before when trying to hook an assembler to a text editor. i'll remove the spaces and run a small .avi through it to see if that is my problem and report back.

OK. It's the audio extraction that's failing.
In both these log files, Audio extraction takes 0 seconds and uses no disc space.
As a result, BeSweet doesn't produce the file "Encoded_Audio_1.ac3/mp2"
Thus, after video encoding, MPlex cannot find the audio to mux and so aborts. Then DVD Author can't find the multiplexed file (as it was never created) and so bombs out and the process fails.
What to do about it?
Firstly there are two options for audio extraction in the Audio tab (Internal and VFW). Try switching to the other one.
If you still have the encoded video files you can spare yourself a full re-encode. Set a new default output folder in the Misc tab, you can save the trouble of re-encoding the video. If the audio extracts and converts properly, just move the Encoded_Audio_1 file to the old project folder and recover (misc tab again) from muxing.
If it still doesn't work, open the AVI in VDubMod, set Video mode to "Direct Stream Copy" then save the AVI again. Use this new copy to convert from scratch.
well, i re-intalled everything into the deafault locations and now it works great. man this is an excellent app! thanx everyone for chimming in:)
