Im trying to find a way to find the bitrate info of mpg or avi. anyone know of a app or a method? tia

You take the filesize (in bits, that's bytes *8) and divide by length (in seconds). Done.
This would give you video+audio of course, so you'll have to demux audio and do the same for audio alone, then subtract, if you need video's bitrate only.

Doesn't VirtualDub display the bitrate under File->Information?!
Not at home, can't check, but I think it does...

For MPEG-2 files with audio and video, ie multiplexed, you shoud use MPEG Validator.
