View Full Version : Subtitles not working, either hardcoded or external

I'm trying to add subtitles to my rip of Police Story but nothing I do works. I've tried both AutoGK and Gordian Knot. I choose the right audio track (Cantonese), select the subtitles, and they simply won't be hardcoded. I have not turned on "Forced subtitles".

Even when I play the movie back and try to use the subtitles externally (an .IDX and .SUB), they still won't show up. Yes, they have the same name as the movie.

Any suggestions? I would prefer hardcoded, but is there another program besides VobSub that can rip the subtitles from the VOBs?

Thanks
Prizm

Hi-

First, you didn't already Demux the subs in DVD Decrypter's Stream Processing, did you? If you did, then you won't get any subs. Did you check the PGC box, as you're supposed to in DVD Decrypter's Settings->IFO Mode Tab? This is for AutoGK, and shouldn't be necessary for GKnot.

Second, check your idx file. Open it in Notepad. Does it have a bunch of timestamps below all the stuff on top? If not, then you don't have any subs to begin with. And the sub file should be at least several MB in size.

Do you have VobSub installed? If so, then when you play an AVI with subs, a green arrow should show up in the SysTray. If you're not getting that, then something's wrong. I have heard (and also experienced with my computer in the past) that some versions of VobSub don't work on some computers. I don't know why. So one suggestion might be to try and install an earlier version of VobSub. 2.16 works better for some.

If worse come to worst, you can always OCR the subs into text files (SRT might work the best, although I prefer SSA) using SubRip (http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Subtitles/SubRip_1.17.1.exe). Quite a few players can then play the subs without having VobSub installed.

Check the idx for eps 2 and 3. Maybe the timestamps begin after 25 minutes or so, and you'll have to adjust the delay. Getting anime subs for the episodes after the first one can be tricky sometimes.

Well,.. I'm not SOOOO Lame %) ... and I do prefer to RiP from DVDs with DVDDec in IFO-Mode(Like for AutoGK.. but i'm using GK-Latest)

Did that already - seems to be no problem here.. Sizes are different for each PCG.

Hmm... never tried to OCR with SubRip to SSA... is it Good? before that did all work(srt-2-ssa) with Ext Soft(Medusa or XombieSub).
and Theese Subs(i have acces to another translations in srt... but theese seems to be from SSA or smthing else..)

I lean towards the timestamp issue too, what times do you get when opening the idx of episodes 2 and 3?

Same goes for prizm, what timestamps show in the idx?

Hi-

The Green Icon Present

Yes, I agree, niamh. There's the clue. You have subs, but they're not showing up until after the episode is over, so-to-speak. They are being counted from the beginning of the first episode, so the first time stamp is probably around the 25-26 minute mark. You'll have to delay them by "-" the amount of the length of the first episode. For episode 3, it's minus the total of the first 2 episodes. There are directions in the idx about how to do this, but they are none too clear. If you fool around with it for awhile, you should get it. Keep track of any changes you make, so you can undo them if it doesn't work. All of us that encode anime have had to go through this learning experience at one time or another.
