hi and welcome to the forum,

you have to know that the avi container does NOT natively support subtitles or chapters. if you want native support you will have to resort to containers like mp4 or matroska (mkv). anyway, there are of course ways to include subtitles and chapters with your avi file, mostly in external files though. the problem is, that those solutions are almost always player dependant. in other words a solution that works great for one player might not work at all for another one.

for subtitles you can use vobsub though. this is an external filter that can display subtitles for any directshow player. here's (http://www.doom9.org/dvobsub.htm) a guide.

for your chapter information you will have to resort to a player specific solution i fear. i for example use solely bsplayer to play back my dvd backups. therefore i usually created bsplayer chapter files. you can create those with chapterXtractor.

you can mux srt and ssa subs in AVI with AVIMux GUI. These files should work in any directshow based player if you have vsfilter installed.

Chapters are not possible.

Not really quite sure what you mean with "playable in any player", if you are talking hardware players or soft players.

If it is the latter & you want to select between multiple subs, you can simply include them in the same path as your .avi file - just give them the same filename plus a descriptive extension plus the correct ending.

E.g.: filename.avi, filename.language1.srt, filename.language2.srt etc. Use dvobsub to overlay subs at playback time. It will allow you to select between the different languages.

If you start from a DVD, you can use vobsub to rip dvd subs into an .idx/sub set - these include original subs from the dvd (i.e. no OCR) in one file. Language selection is possible at playback time.

I personally never tried muxing subs into avis ...

Steve.

How to include original subs from dvd in one file?? I have try using Vobsub to rip out the subtitle from dvd, but when playing the avi file, it just can show the subtitle i had set in the Filter:Vobsub only.It cannot select the various language and turn on/off the subtitle.

If using the dvobsub to overlay subs at the playback time, how it work?? how to make the filename.language1.srt, filename.language2.srt.....

Please advice.
Thanks

In hardware your best bet would be, if you have a DivX-player, using DivX-subs (XSub). Check the divx forums for more info on that. If you dont have a DivX HW-player, then i don't know... :(
