i havent been able to find info about this yet, so i finally decided to post something here. if there's a thread about thsi subject already, pls, feel free to point me to it.

i havent performed any DVD backup in almost 2 years so i'm a bit out of shape. well, i'm trying to catch up with new codecs and progs now. yesterday i installed 2 ripping packages:

1) GK 0.35.0
2) AutoGK 1.92b

i decided to start with XviD via AutoGK 1.92b coz i wanted to try something "new" (let me clear that i'm from the "GordianKnot School" and have only used the Dynamic Duo GK+DivX. i was quite excited with the idea of using a different Codec and program now, but i must say that the excitement have given place to some frustration.

AutoGK 1.92b created an undersized XviD (430Mb).... before someone asks, i have already read the AutoGK Guide thorougly and i believe i did all right. let's face it, this prog is so simple compared to GordianKnot! now i feel like an idiot for not being able to make it work for me! :p

i wonder if the problem comes from the fact i have both GK and AutoGK installed in my sytem.... can i have both without conflicting?

btw, i checked my Video Codec list on Control Panel and i see XviD appears twice there.... (!) i checked their properties but the dialogue-box doesnt give any info on their versions (how can i find out exactly which XviD version i have???). also on the FFDShow window, i see 2 XviD options on the Decoder list:

1) XviD 0.9
2) XviD 1

seems like i have 2 versions installed....

any suggestions on how to make my first XviD-AutoGK effort successful?
what about the coexistence of GK and AutoGK? i hope i can have both in my system. i'm running WinXP SP1.

any help would be deeply appreciated. thnx in advance!

an update to my case....

1) i just uninstalled both versions of XviD and AutoGK 1.92b through Add/Remove Programs.
2) then i restarted the computer.
3) next i installed AutoGK 1.93b

now i only have 1 XviD in my Control Panel's Video Codecs List. :)
however, FFDShow still gives XviD 0.9 and 1.0 as options for Decoders...

is this normal?

i'm gonna try AutoGK again now. let's see if i'll get an undersized movie again....

Hi-

.... can i have both without conflicting?

Yes, no problem there. I suspect the problem was because you had 2 versions of XviD going, and the second one was installed without uninstalling the original version. You still seem to have remnants of the first one, for some reason, so I don't know for sure that your problem is solved. Hope for the best.

When upgrading to a newer XviD, you have to uninstall the previous version (and then hitting "Load Defaults" when going into the new XviD for the first time is also a good idea). If that isn't done, the problems you experienced (undersized, but also oversized files) can occur. There's more information in the AutoGK FAQ (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=72679), particularly question 6.3.

thanx for the reply, manono!

what's the proper way to completely uninstall XviD? when i did it a few hours ago, i used Control Panel's Add/Remove applet. it showed 2 XviD entries and i removed both. after the removal and subsequent reboot, i checked Control Panel again and there was no XviD there. later, after reinstalling AutoGK, i got only 1 XviD entry in the Control Panel. then i thought all was solved but it seems i was wrong....

like i said before, my FFDShow Decoder list has XviD 0.9 and 1.0....and i just found which seems to be more signs of XviD duplicates. this time in my Registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\drivers.desc

"xvidvfw.dll"="XviD MPEG-4 Video Codec"
"xvid.dll"=" XviD MPEG-4 Video Codec"

note that the space before the X is really there....(!)

and after running a search in my HD, i found these files:

c:\windows\sytem32\xvid.ax
c:\windows\sytem32\xvid.dll
c:\windows\sytem32\xvidcore.dll
c:\windows\sytem32\xvidvfw.dll

c:\windows\prefetch\XVID-1.0.2-29082004.EXE-05CD6A50.pf
c:\windows\prefetch\XVID-1.0.3-20122004.EXE-35E370AB.pf

is the presence of thse files ok? just wondering....

xvid.dll and all references to it should be removed as its pre 1.0 version of XviD.
