Is there much of a difference in quality between these two? Is it just that sex264 is open source?
Also, does x264 offer better compression that xvid/divx? Will it eventually stamp out these formats?

sex264 is just a VFW interface to the x264 codec; think of it is a way of accessing x264 in virtualdub and other vfw based applications. sex264's interface is now part of x264, you for builds see the sticky in the New A/V Formats - codecs forum.

x264 is under heavy development right now and is very high quality for such a young codec. IMO it is already comparable to xvid and other high quality codecs in many respects. H.264 / MPEG-4 Part 10 is a powerful standard and x264 definitely still has a lot of development to come.

To get a better grasp on all this I'd recommend reading bond's MPEG-4 sticky (also in the New AV Formats - Codecs forum) and the above mentioned x264 sticky.
