Is there something wrong with this strategy

1) use DVD Shrink (no compression) to write the main movie files
to disk.

2) use DVD-RB(CCE basic) to process the files.

rather than

3) dvddecrypt, vobeit... +dvd-rb/cce

Does DVD Shrink, even with no compression enabled, produce a less than perfect source set to work with.

I have tried other strategies to get at only the main movie but this seems the easiest.

You shouldn't have any quality loss. I do something similar to what you do. I used DVD-RB w/CCE-Basic but I use titlesetblanker to blank out but the main movie and menu instead. Titlesetblanker is easy to use and runs very quickly (on the order of a few seconds). Basically, it replaces all the non-main movie *.vob, *.ifo & *.bup files for a given title with blanks, which play for a couple of seconds. Two keys, you have to rip the DVD to your harddrive first. I use DVDDecryptor. Second, titlesetblank puts a ~ at the end of the original files that were blanked so that you can return to the original DVD if you wish. You will need to remove the these files from you VIDEO_TS folder before running DVD-RB w/CCE-Basic. If not, DVD-RB will include these files when determining bitrate. After I finish I then put the ~ files back into the VIDEO_TS folder and use titlesetblanker to return back to the original DVD.
