View Full Version : weirdest thing - m2v file totally locks up comp! What can I do?

Hey!

Dunno which category this one goes to so i put it here.

I try to make a backup of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind, just the main movie, cause i think it would fit on a dvd-r - video+1 audio+1 subs...

Anyway, when i demux the video, both using vStrip or DVDdecrypter, the m2v file makes the comp go crazy!

What happens is that even just holding the mouse pointer over the file name in explorer will make explorer "Not Responding" according to task manager, and cpu usage according to the same is up to 100%, I cant even quit the program from task manager, it says that "The program cant be closed, maybe its being debugged. Close the debugger first".

Needless to say, since i cant even hover the mouse over the file i cant do anything else with it either, like play it in a software dvd player like powerDVD or importing it into dvd authoring program...

This just happens with .m2v files - when i choose direct stream copy in ripper, the .vob files work just fine - trouble is i cant use vob files in my authoring program (maestro), i need a m2v file.

Anyone knows cause and/or solution to this?

thanx a bunch!

"Sounds" like Windows XP's shmedia.dll "feature".

See:

well it kinda does but i doubt that it is the same problem. See. i have win2k, and there is no shmedia.dll on my system whatsoever, seems like that problem is strictly winXP...

as i said it doesnt matter what prog i approach the file with - it all locks up.. and also i now deleted both software dvd players i had installed - no change..

i will see if i still have some codec left that can decode mpeg-2 video, if thats not the case then i feel that the system shouldnt do anything with the file, hence not lock up!

if that doesnt work i dont have any more ideas at the moment.. do u or anyone else?

In your player or encoder, open the file with a File...Open command or equivalent, rather than hover.
Change explorer to "details" or "list" rather than "thumbnail"
Edit or remove the association for .m2v (Tools...Folder Options...File Types)
Reinstall the OS

a. When i open an m2v file in powerdvd 6 i can select the file, put it in the playlist but when i click ok and it tries to play back the file it freezes.

b. Have always had details, so no thumbnail here..

c. strangely there were no association for .m2v files - so i made one, and directly it said open with wmp - i changed this to open with DVDdecrypter, figured that if i point it to a program that doesnt know what to do with the file it will do nothing.. didn't work though - it seems this problem lies before any associated program comes into the picture, since it's enough that i hover the mouse pointer over the file name - _not_ clicking the file name once so its marked! - for it to go nuts..

d. havent done that yet, but i might if i cant solve it any other way :)

If it immediately said open with wmp, it was associated with WMP (just not showing up separately in the list of file extensions).

Does this happen with any user account, or just administrator account(s)?

Try this -- find all instances of string "m2v" in the registry (using regedit), and look for suspicious entries. Delete any references that aren't part of a program's config info (like DVD Decrypter for example). Then reboot, and reassociate .m2v with the proggie of your choice.

P.S. back up your registry first, try here: http://home.t-online.de/home/lars.hederer/erunt/

fewtch, it worked like a charm!! thanx a lot man :) i was a bit lost in the regedit first - havent messed around so much with it before - but i guess i deleted the right entries anyway, just hope i havent screwed something else up, hehe ;) ...i did back it up though so no problem

thanx to jggimi too for your input :)

but do you guys have any idea what caused this in the first place? Would be interesting to know more exactly where it came from!

hmm... well i managed to produce the same error again :P it seems as it is when i try yo load an .m2v file into DGindex that the error occurs! At least this was what i did when noticing the error again..

And this time around deleting registry entries dont seem to work - there was one entry at the very root of the registry with the value "M2V file" (i think) that i deleted but it wasnt there to delete this time.

Any other thoughts/suggestions? Otherwise im just gonna reinstall my OS... getting tired of this shit, hehe -

oh and about the cause - would be interesting if someone out there could load up an m2v file in DGindex to see if same thing happens? Of course you could potentially screw up your system but if you did then we'd know that loading m2v files into dgindex is not a good idea! A thought is also that it only screws up when dealing with large files - the one im working with is almost 4 GB...

Does that also happen with avi?

Wilbert: No, it's only .m2v files

hey... has everyone else lost interest in this thread? ;) anyway - i think i stumbled on the solution to this mystery:

after reinstalling the OS - i have a ghost so its not any trouble - i figured it couldnt be any problem now! So after installing latest win updates, antivirus and all that i installed PowerDVD to fire up my m2v file - immediately it locked up!!

somehow my eyes fell on the icon tray - where i have a real time virus protector! i disabled it and problem gone, LOL :)

so, easy solution once you come to think of it, like most of the time...

thanx for your (previous, anyway) interest!

I thought about that, but i assumed you would have problems with your avis too :) I guess it tries to download some codecs (or something else, i'm still not sure what exactly) to play it or so.
