View Full Version : Speed decrease using later Decomb?

Is there something different about this release of decomb because my speeds went from 2.4 down to 2.0.. The version i updated from was decomb_25_dll_20031022.zip/AviSynth_253.exe/DVD2AVI v1.77.3dg1.0.0RC2 (MPEG2Dec3dg).zip (SPEED 2.4)
#ASYNTHER MPEG2Source (MPEG2Dec3dg.dll)
[MPEG2Source("%f")]
Telecide(order=1,Post=0,Chroma=True,Guide=1,Gthresh=15)
Decimate(Cycle=5,Mode=0,Quality=3)
ConvertToYUY2()
MonitorFilter()
Currently running (with much slower speeds)(SPEED 2.0)
decomb_25_dll_20040518.zip/AviSynth_255.exe/DGIndex v 1.0.12
#ASYNTHER MPEG2Source (DGDecode.dll)
LoadPlugin("C:\Program Files\AviSynth 2.5\plugins\DGDecode.dll")
MPEG2Source("%f")
Telecide(order=1,Post=0,Chroma=True,Guide=1,Gthresh=15)
Decimate(Cycle=5,Mode=0,Quality=3)
ConvertToYUY2()
I also tried enabling sse2 idct with the ",idct=5" command and that didn't make a difference. Do these upgraded versions do something special thats worth the speed decrease?

You have to isolate DGDecode before I will be interested in your results. All those other filters complicate matters too much. Also, what is the nature of your "SPEED" metric?
Also, one case has MonitorFilter() and one doesn't.
There is no reason for any major slowdown.

The monitor filter wasn't active on the other one either sorry about that. The parameters of telecide and decimate are also unchanged all i did was update to the newest versions of the software i been using for yrs now. I also get the same speed decreases on the second machine i tried it on :(

Again, please isolate DGDecode. What is the nature of your "SPEED" metric?"

Ok after many tests i narrowed down the problem. You want me to isolate DGDecode but I don't want to isolate it because i have been using them exact decomb parameters for 2 years now and i want to continue using them. Ok here are the results.
DGIndex v 1.0.12\VirtualDubMod\AVISynth 2.55\CCE SP v2.64.01.10\
#ASYNTHER MPEG2Source (DGDecode.dll)
LoadPlugin("C:\Program Files\AviSynth 2.5\plugins\DGDecode.dll")
MPEG2Source("%f")
Telecide(order=1,Post=0,Chroma=True,Guide=1,Gthresh=15)
Decimate(Cycle=5,Mode=0,Quality=3)
ConvertToYUY2()
decomb_25_dll_20031022.zip| Speed = 2.5
decomb_25_dll_20040518.zip| Speed = 2.0
Something between the 2 releases is causing a major speed decrease. Are their different commands to properly use Telecide and Decimate. Been awhile as you can see since I updated but something would have to be majorly wrong to see a 30% speed decrease. This same test has been applied to 3 other computers with the same results.

try setting DGDecode(...,i420=true) and compare the speed?
and you really should test dgdecode alone too

It sounds like he's talking about the two Decomb versions now. If so I will move this to Avisynth Usage.
@aftertaste
Is it DGDecode or Decomb that you are questioning?
>decomb_25_dll_20031022.zip
>decomb_25_dll_20040518.zip
These are not my version numbers. Tell me the Decomb version numbers.
Generally, if you reject my debugging procedures, I will not support you.

ok i should start by aplogizing I should have done more tests before posting at first i thought it might be a DGDecode issue but it turns out to be a decomb issue. The version of decomb i was using before is as follows.
Speed=2.5
Decomb Plugin for Avisynth
(Version 5.1.0)
Newer decomb version is.
Speed=2.0
Decomb Plugin for Avisynth
(Version 5.2.1)
As far as i was aware these are both your versions but i could be wrong. I always go to http://www.avisynth.org/warpenterprises/ to get the latest versions and it says your name next to the d/l. So anyways i hope i'm not comming off rude i was just pointing out a possible problem. If however there is a more recommended version of decomb to use by all means point me in the right direction :) Or maybe a few versions in between and i can do testing to see where it starts to decrease. Maybe this should be moved into the AviSynth area hehe sorry about that.

It's cool.
Yes, those are my versions and you have given me enough information to try to duplicate it.
I'd still like to know what your speed metric is. What does speed 2.5 mean?
Moving to Avisynth forum...

By the way they both say Donald Graft in the faq by the version numbers and i'm guessing that is you :) So it appears i found the right guy to talk to just started in the wrong area. Again I apoligize next time i will do more testing before I post. Now maybe we can work together to see why there is such a drastic speed decrease between decomb v5.1.0 to v5.2.1

well i'm not a pro doing this just know enough to get by so i'm not sure what you mean by speed metric. I am reffering to my CCE speeds if thats any help.

Would it hurt then if you just took a look into CCE's manual and tell us what it's supposed to mean? Frames per second? n times realtime encoding speed? Donuts per fortnight?
manono

2.5 means 2.5 x real time. So, if he's encoding a 24fps source, his encoding speed is 60fps. In other words, he's saying his encoding speed has dropped by 20%.

Someone tell me when this fourm turned into "resight the 3rd word on the second line of page 13 in the manual to proceed" I feel like i'm 16 again playing a Sierra adventure game.
So what did you're post accomplish becides accusing me of copywrite infringement. You offered nothing in your post to help futher the speed issue. Why did you bother waisting your time to post. And futhermore how are you so sure i don't own a legal copy of CCE. I own $30,000+ in audio recording equipment that I use strickly as a hobbie so is it far to say I can afford to buy a copy of CCE? Please keep your copywrite infridgement accusations to yourself. And don't bother waisting even more time trying to cover yourself with some bs story about "i was just trying to be helpful" because you know damn well what you were trying to say !! If you're here you're smart enough to know what i meant by CCE speed being 2.5. And if not manono was kind enough to spell it out for everyone and he is exactly right.
Again I am not asking anyone to help me fix this problem. I have been using older versions of decomb for over 2 years with excellent results. I was trying to be helpful to the community and to Neuron2 in pointing out a possible problem with later versions of decomb.
Neuron can you send me a link to any versions between 5.1 - 5.2.1 and i will test all versions and post speed results. That's as much help as I can offer related to this issue.

One possibility for the speed decrease was mode 0 of decimate was switched over to block based metrics instead of the full frame abs difference. The full frame metric was faster to calculate to begin with and there was a fast mmx routine for it if I remember correctly... while the 32x32 block based routine does not have an mmx version. That's just one possiblity, for testing you might see if there is much of a speed difference between those different versions of decomb using only telecide().

Hello?! Copyright infringement? Taking a look into a manual to explain some metric that could be anything is suddenly copyright infringement?
Why did you bother waisting your time to post.
Why, really? *sigh*
And futhermore how are you so sure i don't own a legal copy of CCE.
Ummm... what makes you think *I* own, have or use CCE, so how should I (or probably a lot of other folks on this forum) take a look into it's manual to find out what the "speed" value means?
Nobody other than yourself was even thinking about copyright infringement here.
HTH. HAND. <insert expletive here>

Hmmm, I had no idea what you meant by "speed=2.5" so I must not be smart enough. Don also asked you three times what it meant so he must not be smart enough either.
P.S. I've got a Honda Nighthawk motorcycle and I've had it up to 3.8! Can your bike go that fast?
