After encoding from an avisynth script with CCE 2.70.01.05 and trying to author a DVD with DVDAuthorGUI I get the following message:

INFO: [???] File D:\Capture\cap.mpv looks like an MPEG Video stream.
**ERROR: [???] File unrecogniseable!

(Also tried an older version 2.67.00.27 and I get the same thing.)

The file plays in MPC, and opens in VDubMod; however, if I select file->file information in Vdubmod it crashes.

This is the information about the file from BitRate Viewer:
Num. of picture read: 313
Stream type: MPEG-2 MP@ML VBR
Resolution: 704*576
Aspect ratio: 4:3 Generic
Framerate: 25.00
Nom. bitrate: 9000000 Bit/Sec
VBV buffer size: 112
Constrained param. flag: No
Chroma format: 4:2:0
DCT precision: 10
Pic. structure: Frame
Field topfirst: Yes
DCT type: Frame
Quantscale: Nonlinear
Scan type: ZigZag
Frame type: Progressive
Notes:

(I also tried adding borders to make the resolution up to 720x576, but that didn't work either)

Any ideas please?

vdubmod always crashes for me if I ever try to view the file properties of any mpeg2 stream, m2v, mpv, mpg, vob, etc.

Tried the same file in DVDLab, and it had no complaints.
Also, the resulting vob file produced by DVDLab didn't cause VirtualDubMod to crash when I selected file information.

Your problem is not with the video. It is with the audio. mplex correctly detects the video stream, but when it tries to read the audio stream, it appears to be unrecognisable.
