I tried googling but couldn't find a definite time frame. Any old school users out there?

2COOL- I came up with this (http://www.pioneeraus.com.au/dvdrecording/overview/history/), but it's only a sketch of DVD-R/RW history, plus, it's published from Pioneer's perspective. According to this doc, DVD-R media was first released for "general use" in 2000, as opposed to the original media that was suitable for "authoring", circa 1997.

Don't know how helpful this will be...and I'm "Googled" out. :)

Can't give any precise info either. It would seem that (one of?) the first "general use" burners for consumers was the Pioneer dvr-a03, released in mid-2001.

This would coincide with the timeline graph shown on the page ammck55 referenced: "Consumer release" for both dvd-rw and -r in June 2001.

Steve

Googling leads to all sorts of interesting articles ("blast from the past"), but it doesn't get much more precise than this. Reviews for dvd writers start with the a03, and news of available dvd-r media news start popping up in mid- to late 2001, e.g. http://www.cdmediaworld.com/hardware/cdrom/cd_news_0110.shtml .

Thanks for the replies guys! I found another reference that says in 1995, "DVD truly got started".

http://www.pioneer.co.jp/crdl/tech/dvd/1-e.html

1996: DVD Player were available for home use and the DVD Video Book was published.

1997: The 3.95 GB Write-Once DVD-R Book, and the 2.6 GB rewritable
DVD-RAM Book, were published. Pioneer began selling industrial DVD-R discs and drives.

1999: A DVD-RW Book and DVD-RAM Book, which define 4.7 GB rewritable formats, were published. Two application specifications, the DVD Audio and the DVD Video Recording specification, were introduced

2000: A specification for 4.7 GB DVD-R was introduced.

The dvd-r 2.0 standard for "general" use blanks (as opposed to the "authoring" blanks requiring >15k$ drives and using a different wavelength laser) was only established in 2000 ... see e.g. http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0FXG/is_4_13/ai_61888472 or http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0FXG/is_1_12/ai_53578863 .

I am not so sure about other rewritable standards such as dvd-ram and dvd-r and their use in consumer devices, though. http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0FXG/is_1_12/ai_53578863 is an interesting read, dating back to 1999.
