I've been telling various people about how great DVD-RB is, and I just ran into a question I didn't know how to answer.

A friend of mine uses DVDShrink. I told her she should try DVD-RB. I mentioned something about how with ReJig she could just use that in place of DVDShrink, or use an actual encoder for her backups.

She asked me "If I'm just going to use the transcoder in DVD-RB why not just use DVDShrink then?"

I had no idea how to answer that! <lol@myself> Is there really any kind of quality or functional difference between using the ReJig transcoder with RB and just using DVDShrink? Or is the real benefit to RB the simplicity and high quality from using the encoders, and ReJig is just in there for the smaller backups where an encoder isn't really a requirement to keep high quality?

Thanks for any insight folks!

She is right. There isnt too much reason to go with dvd rb/rejig combo in my opinion. Tell her to try out dvd rb with quenc .54 which is a fantastic FREE ENCODER. This should in most cases of high compression result in better results than using dvd shrink.

basically yes. for smaller backups full re-encoding is not needed and a transcoder will do just as good a job only much quicker. so DVD-Rebuilder gives you this option.
for larger compression amounts then en encoder will give you better results the majority(theres always an exception) of the time.

so its about having options and choices. DVD-RB gives you them, from using a transcoder to using both commercial and free encoders.

I'm pretty confident that any Encoder will do a better job than DVDshrink. This includes rejig,Quenc, and then the non free ones CCE, TMpeg, Procoder. In my opinion DVDshrink is terrible...

first of all rejig is NOT an ENcoder

secondly you dont seem to be familiar with shrink

lets NOT start an arguement here. i can throw a lot of tech stuff at you guys and give an opinion on some of the things people have said in the past about different transcoders and the process in general, but at the end of the day it comes down to letting people use what they want to use and be satisfied with it.

so if you dont like the quality of a program then fine say you dont like the results it produces. if you want to say more you better be ready to back it up with more than opinion....somewhere else. i personally have read too many things from people who have no idea how any of these things work and am not going to waste my time. lifes to short. :D
