Forum rules (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm):

1) Read up before asking! There are tons of guides, FAQs and each forum has a dedicated Q&A thread with additional info.

1a) Use the search function before posting. Chances are your question has already been answered.

12) How NOT to post on this forum:

...Do not ask "what's best" because this question cannot be answered objectively. Each and everyone has their own view about what's best in a certain area. The best is what works best for you!

If you mean what codec is best then as you`ve already found out, it`s subjective :)

If you mean what fourcc should you use it depends on what you want to play the files on.

To play an Xvid on an older standalone divx player you may need to use the DIVX fourcc as I sometimes have to with mine although if it is less than two years old the chances are that it will play Xvid fourcc files as long as you don`t have QPEL or GMC on of course.

Best bet is usually to stick to the Xvid fourcc if it works okay, and of course on a pc it`s fine to always use xvid fourcc.

Regarding quality I prefer Xvid, DivX is also good but to be honest it`s really up to you to decide what you think is best - there is always the codecs shootout if you really want some other opinions :)
