I have a question regarding CCE 2.70 and 23.976 fps material.
When i feed it into CCE via Avisynth using the following script:
AVISource("J:\Test.avi",false)
FreezeFrame(0,1,1)
BilinearResize(720,340)
AddBorders(0,70,0,70)
ConvertToYUY2()
Assumefps(23.976)
I get the the "Inv 3:2 pulldown" greyed out and marked (see picture below).
As this already is 23.976 fps - i see no real reason for this to be marked - i'm not interested in Inv 3:2 pulldown for this material.
What do i do?
I seem to be getting jerky movments at certain scenes when using CCE 2.70.01.05 - and i didn't get this with previous versions.
(Just to add some info - i'm using block scan - Zigzag, progressive frame and fade on static scene).
What am i doing wrong?

I think the greying out might only denote that the option is unavailable, as opposed to being forced checked.
In any event, uncheck "for DVD" and such restrictions should be eased.
Dunno about the jerkiness.

unchecking "for DVD" and rechecking pulldown (which i want) forces the "Inv 3:2 pulldown" again - in grey.
Might just opt to do without the pulldown - and apply the pulldown later through pulldown.exe.
Ps. I havn't understood when to choose 3:2 or 2:3 pulldown in this new version of CCE (even after reading the manual) - can someone enlighten me?

ok - make sure the "for DVD" bullet is NOT checked...it was the called DVD Compliant for the older versions...checking it will make sure all your mpeg2 files are 100% complaint and your bitrate will be maxed at 9800 regardless what YOU put in - uncheck it.
the Pulldown adds pulldown flags for 24p material, which is what you want when making DVDs - choose 2:3 pulldown (which is what new standard) 3:2 pulldown is actually the archaic style done a while back...even though the term is correctly called 3:2 pulldown youre actually performing the 2:3 pulldown.
Inv 3:2 Pulldown is when you make a 60i material into 24p
the jerkyness youre experiencing is due to Inverse Telecine not being performed right - it's trial and error

Thanks for those tips.
I still don't understand why i'm forced to do Inv 3:2 pulldown for this material - as it is 23.976 fps.

I do not think inverse is actually done, just the option partially activated, in case the source is 29.97, more like if-then option.

ya..IVTC isn't done - also if the timecode is 00:00:00:00 then pulldown wont be performed...make the timecode 01:00:00:00 then you'll be good

I have tested that statement out - and it is definetly not true.
Pulldown is performed also with timecode being 00:00:00:00.

really?...on my system if the timecode is 00:00:00:00 then pulldown wont perform - i get a timecode inv 3:2 error pop up, but when i change the timecode then it works...im using CCE 2.70.02.00 - iirc i do remember it working at 00:00:00:00 with 2.70.01.05, i'll find out
my source is Avid Reference .mov
@nimrodim - what version and source format are you using?
i just checked the 2.70.02.00 manual and it reads
"Initially, the first frame (frame number 0) is tied to the timecode 01:00:00:00. Although you change this setting, you should avoid using the timecode 00:00:00:00 since this value has special meaning to Cinema Craft encoder SP especially when you perform Pulldown or Inverse 3:2 Pulldown."
perhaps it worked at 00:00:00:00 with 2.70.01.xx but not with the newer versions

Yup - I'm using version 2.70.01.05 - this could be the difference.
How do you get around changing the timecode later in version 2.70.02.00 - for editing and adding sound later?
Still annoyed at getting jerky movments at certain scenes with this version - which i didn't get with previous versions.
And i havn't found a solution for this yet.

it's standard for your presentation to start at 01:00:00:00 for preroll - on a tape you'd have a minute of SMPTE bars and tone, some black, a slate, some black, then your show - at Technicolor all of our masters are put on IMX (or DigiBeta for Clients) with the actual show starting at 01:00:00:00 - it's standard practice - that's why in CCE you see the start time at 01:00:00:00 and NOT 00:00:00:00 - it still works, who really cares what timecode you use

Well i moved on to version version 2.70.02.00
You are right pulldown is not allowed for timecode 00:00:00:00.
So i tried 01:00:00:00 and pulldown worked.
It didn't seem to pose any problem when synching with the audio and subtitles in Dvdmaestro. (It started all the assets at 00:00:00:00)regardless of the timecode I put in CCE.
