Hi!
i'm new here and if these questions have been asked before, i'm sorry, but i did a search and nothing came up!
i have several problems when converting my dvd's to avi. i use version 1.84
1. the volume of the avi file is too low, while on the vob file it is perfect.
2. when i choose 2 cd a 1400mb, autogk converts them in one file of 1400mb as well as 2 files with 700mb each. how can i change that?
3. no subtitles show up! i've chosen forced subtitels in the advanced settings!
4. how do i know which subtitle to choose? often there are 2 english subtitles to choose from!
thank you!

I have never had any problems downloading Auto GK Beta Updates, but when I try to download 1.91, I get the following message:

disable referrer blocking in your firewall.

Hi-
1. AC3 or MP3 audio? If AC3, go into the AC3 Filter Configuration and change the Preset to Loud.
2. AutoGK first has to make the complete AVI, and then it splits it into 2 parts. I don't understand why you'd want to change anything. Maybe you run short of hard drive space? If so, get another hard drive, or clear more room on the one you have.
3. Don't choose Forced Subtitles. They're a special class of subtitles (like Alien talk in the Star Wars movies). Just choose the Subtitle language you want on the main screen. Don't check the Forced Subs box in Advanced settings, unless they are really Forced Subs. Do you understand about Forced Subs?
4. As near as I can tell, it doesn't make any difference which you choose, unless one of them is for the hearing impaired. Just choose the first one and you'll be OK.

1. it's ac3. i'll have to check that out when i'm on my home computer again!
2. it takes twice the time to convert. well, if it can't be changed, then it's ok!
3. i understand about forced subs. i want to know what they talk in italian in the godfather, but i don't want to have the english subs all the time!
4. i guess one is for the audio commentary!

@Rafael: Have you got a download manager maybe?
@ Kødulv:
1- manono is right, it's an AC3 filter set-up, it's low by default
2- LoL! :) sorry. No it doesn't of course, it takes a minute extra.
3- Some forced sbtitles have their own stream, instead of forced flags in the main sub stream;this looks to be your case, since no subtitles show up when you choose forced
4- you preview them, as manono said, it's usually the first one (not always), in your case you must have one full stream and one "forced" stream. So preview the dvd, check which one is the one you want (or load the idx in subresync, where you can preview), and deselect forced subtitles.

Do I need a download manager? I never had any trouble downloading AutoGK updates from either IE or Netscape, and this has arisen all of a sudden. I have not done any changes to my settings lately either. Might there be a problem with my ISP? This is bewildering....

so how can i get the subs for the non-english parts then?
niamh

Well preview the subtitles, as I said :). It looks like one of the english streams is reserved entirely for this.
@Rafael, no, they usually interfere, I'm afraid I don't know what the issue is then :(

sorry, but how can i find the AC3 Filter Configuration?
niamh
16th February 2005, 15:21
usually by right-clicking on the video screen on nearly all players, except of course WMP
jggimi
16th February 2005, 15:37
Another way is to click on Start .... (All) Programs .... AC3Filter .... AC3Filter Config
Kødulv
16th February 2005, 21:45
ok, i have found it, do i have to do this before i convert the dvd or afterwards?
jggimi

The filter is used during playback of Dolby Digital (.ac3) soundtracks. Such soundtracks are not modified by AutoGK at all.
Kødulv

ok, back to subtitles. they are perfect when i preview them, however in the finished avi-file they are missing!
jggimi

Yes. The authoring company has many ways of managing subtitles. Since it is apparent that forced subtitles were not used, there is likely a separate subtitle track that has English whenever Italian is spoken. Your VOB set likely has several subtitle tracks, the trick is selecting the right one. You might open up the Streams Information file created by DVD Decrypter, there might be descriptions of the various subtitle tracks. If not, the easiest way is to play the DVD, and see what subtitle track was selected by the player to produce the appropriate track.

but the main problem is that when i view the preview they are there, but on the finished file they're not!
here is my stream information:
0x20 - Subtitle - Deutsch - [SubPicture 01: Wide/Letterbox] / LBA: 9366 / PTS: 00:00:46.520 / Delay: 46240ms

0x22 - Subtitle - Turkish - [SubPicture 03: Wide/Letterbox] / LBA: 9370 / PTS: 00:00:46.520 / Delay: 46240ms

0x25 - Subtitle - English - [SubPicture 06: Wide/Letterbox] / LBA: 860611 / PTS: 00:40:20.240 / Delay: 2419960ms
0x80 - Audio - AC3 / 2ch / 48kHz / DRC / Deutsch / LBA: 8 / PTS: 00:00:00.280 / Delay: 0ms
0x81 - Audio - AC3 / 6ch / 48kHz / DRC / English / LBA: 7 / PTS: 00:00:00.280 / Delay: 0ms
0x82 - Audio - AC3 / 2ch / 48kHz / DRC / English / LBA: 9 / PTS: 00:00:00.280 / Delay: 0ms
0xE0 - Video - MPEG-2 / 720x576 (PAL) / 16:9 / Letterboxed / LBA: 1 / PTS: 00:00:00.280 / Delay: 0ms
which one should i pick?
and how do i see which subtitle is used, when the dvd is played?
jggimi
21st February 2005, 23:37
Since you say its perfect in preview but is "missing" when encoded, are you using "burnt-in" subtitles or external subs? The former become part of the video image, the latter are in separate files -- to see the latter, DirectVobSub must be installed, and the files must have the same name as the .avi file you are watching.
There are two English subtitle tracks:0x21 Subpicture 02
0x25 Subpicture 06Which did you select in AutoGK? I assume it was the same track that is selected automatically in a DVD player when you want English subtitles only during Italian conversation.

i'm using burned in subtitles!
i think one is the audiocommentary, i have already tried both, don't know why this doesn't work!

From what I can see forced subs option causes no sub to appear. Manual checking (ripping all subs with VobSub) is required to determine if there are any real forced subs (I had a couple of DVDs on which I couldn't find forced subs myself...)
