I'm converting my son's Disney VHS tapes to DVD. My encoder of choice, up to a month or so ago, was TMPGEnc Plus. I purchased CCE-Basic, primarily to use with DVD-Rebuilder, to back up DVD-9s to DVD-5s. I've been very please and found that DVD-RB w/CCE is actually faster than Instant Copy 7 (IC-7). I was surprised to find that using a two-pass VBR was FASTER than a transcoder.
Anyway ... back to converting my son's Disney VHS tapes to DVD. I capture the tape by VCR ==> RCA-cable ==> Sony DV Camera ==> Firewire to my PC. I used Ulead 6 (which I got off of ebay for $20) to capture. I then extract the audio using Goldwave, convert it to 48-KHz, and use the timewarp function to strech it to the same lenght as the video. I've found that, in general, the audio runs about 0.5-seconds per hour faster the the video. Next I use CCE-Basic (previously TMPGEnc-Plus) to encode the video using 2-pass VBR (max 9000, ave 6000, min 2000 kpbs). I then author using TMPGEnc DVD Author. I done this numerous times, with the last 6 or 7 using CCE-Basic as my encoder, without problems except for the very last one. Now my problem ...
The AVI capture was 1:21:38 long. CCE-Basic appeared to terminate without error but the video was only 1:12:00+ in length. So I did it again and got it stopping at the same point. Next I tried encodeing it with CCE-Basic using 6000 kbps CBR and it stoped near, but not exactly at the same point. So I then check the AVI for error using Virtual Dub ... no error. Finally, I encoded the video using TMPGEnc Plus CQ (100%) and it encoded just fine. I did, however, had to used DVDShrink to Shrink the DVD after authoring because it was oversized.
Anyway, ... I'm not sure why CCE-Basic just stopped (without any error messages). Any thoughts? Also, any suggestions for other tests / checks that I might could run for errors ... even though TMPGEnc Plus had not problems with the AVI file?
Thanks.
