View Full Version : XviD fluent playback not possible. Why ?

Ok this is an issue I have been wondering about for quite some time.
Why is it that XviD and for that matter all mpeg4 encodes ,as far as I have seen, always display a somewhat slight stuttering playback campared to the DVD Source.
I want to make sure you understand. This does not depend on playback hardware or quality of encodes.
Can somebody explain this ?
Thanx in advance

Use the search, turn it to "all posts" (not limiting to 30 days) and search for "banding".
You might want to search for ReClock DShow as well.

It is a playback problem indipendent on content/codec or even player used.
Simply set monitor refresh rate to be a multiple of movie framerate.
For example: for PAL 25 fps set refresh of 50(?),75,100,etc...
It will play flawlessly then.
For NTSC stuff i don't know as a live in PAL country, but it's more difficult i guess because of fractionary framerates (29,97...).
In this cases it's better to try the utilities already mentioned by Koepi.

reclock caused an error on my system
but yeah
you;re refresh rate should be an nice multiable of of hte frame rate
or jsut watch stuff on your tv thats what I do anyways but I guess some peopel don't have tv yet hmm
but I'm useing a refresh rate of 72hz on my lcd moni and I'm not noticing to much lag in anime encodes and source dvds so [b]either[.b] my tv or moni
so I dono
either that or your system can;t handle mpeg4 mabe?

Wouldn't using the overlay mixer solve refresh rate issues? Or is it dependent on monitor refresh rate no matter what the renderer used?
P.S. I seem to get few stutters with 100Hz refresh, maybe because it's pretty close to 23.976 * 4 (PAL encodes should be perfect)...

ovrelay mixer only affects hte video overlay
or atleast to best of my understanding
so yeah
it depends on your display;s refresh rate

I don't think you clearly understand what I'm talking about because you have all grown used to this behavior by now I suspect.
This is something I first experienced with the old mpeg4 Codecs and that hasn't changed since.
Understand I'm not talking about a stuttering issue.
This is not dependent on hardware, refreshrates, framerates, NTSC or PAL. BTW I'm from pal country and my monitor runs 100Hz.
The phenomena:
It is best explained like all motion happens in a certain Rhythm.
Like a movie scene where a car drives slowly down the street and the camera is panning vertically. If you watch carefully you'll see the cars movement not smooth but in small jumps as in a certain rhythm.
I have verified this behavior on a wide variety of different machines on different monitors with different codecs.
I'm not looking for a solution as I don't think there is one. I'm merely looking for an explanation if anyone has one.
But I guess I'm the only one aware of this.
I'll see if I perhaps could find you a sample of the The phenomena
Thanx for reading ;)

That's more or less the effect of 25 fps progressive. It'll be smoother with 50fps interlaced.
That's a very basic phenomenon if this is what you mean.

Thanx so much for replying
Well I'm not to wise on the subject I admit. But all my DVD PAL movies are 25 fps Progressive and they seem much smoother than the equivalent XviD rip ?

Are they smooth on your display or your TV?

Hmm good question. Never really tried that. But I'm pretty sure it's the video-Stream. Will test.....
