I have a Sony camcorder DCR-TRV120 NTSC ILINK for DV and I have Firewire cable IEEE 1394 and when I conect to my windows 2000 he understand the firewire, but my cam he list like "Microsoft DV Camera and VCR" in the control panel. And when I try to capture from WinDV, always drop frames. This is should be the error ? He should appears something like "Sony DV" ? What can I do ?

What is your PC hardware?

I'm seeing the same thing (I did a search and found this thread). I have a Sony TRV-460, connected to my PC via firewire, and I have windows 2000.
I'm able to capture video to the PC just fine, using Nero. However, I wanted to write a couple of avi files back to the camcorder, to archive them, and I'm having no luck (trying windv).
In both cases, though, I'm seeing the same "Microsoft DV Camera and VCR" mentioned above, rather than my camcorder.

My JVC shows up the same way but it can both send and recieve to the computer with WinDV. I have not been able to send material to a Sony DV camera through the firewire in either direction.Strange about the dropped frames though.

You can try DVapp (freeware) and see if it works.

I tried dvapp, and I'm still having a problem. Sony was no help, either (their response was to check with the manufacturer of my computer or my capture card, even though I tried to explain I'm not having trouble capturing).
In my case, my problem is with sending video to my camera (TRV460) from my computer. I'm apparently able to send commands, because I can make the camera pause and record, but no picture is showing up on the camera.

I have a Sony PC100E and it has worked in/out since Win98SE. The first OS that recognized my camcorder as a "Sony" was WinXP - however it never mattered what the OS recognized or not - I've always been able to capture and export to DV with NLE programs like Ulead and Premiere.
However, I wanted to write a couple of avi files back to the camcorder, to archive them, and I'm having no luck (trying windv). Are you sure that the IEEE 1394 input is enabled on your camcorder? Most camcorders have it disabled because then they are not "digital vcrs" which costs less custom fees on import...

I don't know what the problem is. My camcorder has a "DVin" option in the settings, and I turned that on. When I click on "record" in the software (windv or dvapp) the camera does start recording, so the PC must be sending commands. But either the computer isn't sending a picture, or the camera isn't receiving it.
