View Full Version : Losing quality

In TMPGEnc, I try to encode a AVI file to DVD Video.

Runtime: 00:42:41 (61,393 fr)

Video:
Resolution: 624x352
FPS: 23.97
Bitrate: 981 kb/s
Codec: XviD

Audio:
Codec: 0x0055(MP3) ID'd as MPEG-1 Layer 3
Bitrate: 157 kb/s (78/ch, stereo) VBR LAME3.92
Fs: 48000 Hz

I've managed to encode it to a MPEG-2 stream that works burning as NTSC.
No stuttering, 23.97 (internally 29.97), but I get bad quality. It seems like very light, and unclear, like those movies that is recorded from the cinema with camera and then sent out on the net. It loses too much of the quality.
What settings should I use to avoid this loss of quality?

you compared the quality of your video to an downloaded movie, so i asked if this your downloaded this one

It's a downloaded file, though it's good quality, ca. as good as normal cable TV, on the computer. The source it's made of is HDTV and that's why it's so good...When I convert it, I lose all the quality and they just seems like those bad VCD releases :\

My guess is you won't receive much assistance with a Rule 6 violation.

My question is in general, not just this file. Much of the content is recorded from a TV channel I pay for, so it's not illegal, even though it's downloaded from the net, imo.

well first off the dc com. should always be ten that is quilty doent add and extra space justs adds a15-20 min per 1/2 hr worth of movie. motion eastame should also be hight makes it look soo much better adds alot of time also but if you dont whant one to look like crap then change it.
pic 2
should have video argment correct best to put it on auto or 1:1
pic 3
should always close the GOP it will cause a ton of errors l8r on trust me lolz
pic 5

should use error correction adds a few megs but worth having sometimes dvd players glitch with low bitrate sound error protection stops it

but i still need more info like ur using constsant bitrate i norm set my max around 2200(dvd) min 0 or 1800(anime cartoons)

look in my sig got my site u can get my templates it has a optimized martix and and code

ps just noticed i spelled it wronge its www22.brinkster.com/trigger911

The templates wasn't available...Could you add them to a attachment here or something?

In picture number 1, motion search precision should be high and DC componant precision should be at 9 bits. If your video is letterboxed, you can change the aspect ratio from 4:3 to 16:9 to make a 16:9 dvd.

In picture number 2, a better video arrange method would be: full screen (keep aspect ratio), most players won't play a custom sized mpeg2!

In picture number 3, closed GOP and detect scene change should be checked.

In picture number 4, quantize matrix can be set to MPEG standard, and soften block noise can be checked (may not be necessary)

Thx for the help, but now it says I can't use the MPEG-2 Plugin anymore...It was just a 30 days thing or somthing :\

Closed GOP doesn't need to be enabled, in fact, better leave it disabled.

Search the forums for the QLB matrix, enter those values in the custom quant matrix tables and save the matrix so you can use it later as well. Try that one, another good option is KVCD Notch. Do not enable soften block noise, it will only make the video much softer.

What comes to the trial thingie, there's QuEnc and HC Encoder that are free MPEG2 encoders. See the forum section right below this one. TMPGEnc excels in MPEG1, those two programs are better than TMPGEnc in MPEG2.

You mean QLB? If you just can use a custom quant matrix, it's as compatible as anything else. I wouldn't use TMPGEnc 3 anyway, the latest 2.5-branch version is much better, and you also get to adjust all the necessary settings.

also you dont know what or how meny i convert at i time i run a small bussness where i make home movies into videos etc... tmpgenc 3 is much faster for batch jobs im a lazy sob btw ^^. but is the qbl matrix better than the kvcd one if so i might have to check it out but i use tmpgenc 2.5 for my own use. do this other encoders for it encode the files smaller at the same stats as the tmpgenc 2.5 or is there a compairation i can look at sorry for the spelling its 4am here when im writing this gettin redy to head to bed.
