View Full Version : Converting SUP to SRT, SSA or (Vob)SUB?

I am demuxing DVB subtitles into SUP files using ProjectX. To make use of these in the way I wish, I need to convert them to either SRT, SSA or VobSub's SUB format. Is there a program that can do this?
I have tried getting ProjectX to write SON files and then converting to SSA using Subtitle Workshop, however there seems to be a disconnect there - the ProjectX SON file contains references to .bmp files containing the subtitles, but SW interprets these fields as the title text itself. An OCR step seems to be missing somewhere :-(

There is no OCR facility in Subtitle Workshop. You would need SubRip or SubResync except neither can open .sup nor .son+.bmp .
You said it could be either .srt (text subs) or .ssa (text subs) or .idx+.sub (graphical subs) so I guess you are not modifying the subs. If you can tell a bit about "To make use of these in the way I wish" there might be a way to use .sup or .son+.bmp directly.
As for .son+.bmp (DVD Maestro graphical sub format) you can convert it to .idx+.sub using Yusaku's great little toy Son2VobSub (http://www.anime.cz/s2v/).

When I say "To make use of these in the way I wish", what I mean is:
Two options really - VobSub or SSA I can use with the VirtualDub plugins to overlay permanent subs onto the recordings before I convert them to XVid or x264. I will do it this way if I want to put a recording onto my PDA which has the sound output disabled.
Option 2 - When converting for use on the PC I put the XVid or 264 and Ogg Vorbis or AAC audio into a Matroska container - MKVToolnix suggests it can mux either SSA or SRT directly, so I was hoping to try that (dunno if I can play it back just yet though - that's probably the subject of my next question ;-).
Edit: I have downloaded SON2VOBSUB, but alas I don't have a compiler - is there a binary somewhere?

The binary is included in the archive :) ...

It only unpacked a .cpp source for me - off to try again.
Edit: Ahh - that's the difference between using XAce to unpack the .rar and WinRAR. I now have the .exe, my thanks.

I see. I normally don't embed subtitles into the video but keep as separated files like .idx+.sub to be able to switch between languages or turn it on/off. Hardware players like Pioneer DV-470 or DV-575A or DV-676A or Philips DVP720SA or DVP762 can play .idx+.sub and many players can play .srt but I prefer graphical sub formats to avoid boring OCR process when converting DVD to XviD. No idea about your PDA as I never own one but I would think it should be possible maybe with firmware upgrade (does it have firmware?? ;-p).
Matroska container supports .idx+.sub and good news is, according to this page (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=54306), MKVtoolnix can mux .idx+.sub! But if you love OCR'ing then go with .srt or .ssa ;). I don't think there is any hardware player that plays .mkv yet but for .ogm yes the DV-575A or DV-676A can but .ogm only supports .srt muxing at the moment and I'm not sure if any of the OGM players can play muxed subs.

Nope. Problems when using SON2VobSub - please see new thread:
