View Full Version : Having trouble with xvid on the xbox

I'm having trouble with the xvid version that comes with Gordian Knot (1.03?). These files don't seem to play well on the xbmp v.2.4 player. Lots of frames are dropped and sometimes weird colors appear...
All other xvids work perfectly.

I was hoping someone knew a way to fix it and hopefully point me to better player :)

It's time you remove xbmp and install xbmc.
xbmp is quite old and needs to be replaced.
xbmc from CVS is also able to play back nerodigital encoded files.

If you can get hold of the iso of "auto-installer" this includes a prebuilt xmbc ready for installing on your xbox. Plays pretty much everything.

Its on the xbox-hq website as it is written by some of the guys there. Xmbc definitely beats Xmbp, I thought that was discontinued?

There are many for sure!

I keep updated 5 xboxes, mine and my friends' :D

I end up using mine instead of my standalone divx player and dvd player. They`re brilliant and they seem to play just about any video format out there.

Yep, it's the best "everything"-player :)
It has just some problems with HD and some codecs coz of the CPU (733Mhz) but i modded mine with a 1.4Ghz Celeron and it plays everything... :)

Thx! I've just tried the videos and they work perfectly now.

Some more question while i'm at it:
Where can i find the options for this player? I want to disable the flicker filter.
And is there a way to disable this filter for all programs and games? It just makes everything a blurry mess imo.

Btw, i was thinking about getting a progressive tv. Will i be able to play my pal dvds at 720p with the xbox? I've heard the normal xbox dvd player only played interlaced, but maybe xbmc can play them at 720p?

Well, for info and stuff i suggest you to look at http://www.xboxmediacenter.com/ or to ask in their forum.

Was it difficult to mod the xbox?

Sounds like a nice setup :)

Difficult enough to not do it myself, but i don't know much about that stuff anyway.

If you got a newer model you HAVE to use a modchip, but when you got an older one then you can flash the bios. I guess flashing the bios is a lot easier, since you don't have to solder anything/much.

Well, some soldering skills are needed and the modding is a bit tricky.
Btw there are mod stores that sells already 1.4Ghz modded xboxes.
A 64Mbytes RAM expansion is possible too for a total of 128Mbytes...

Is it just HDTV stuff you upgraded it for or did you have problems with other things before?

I usually just watch Xvid and DVD`s on mine but the only thing that I`ve had a problem with is a minor thing in xmbc where you can change the framerate of a 23.976 avi to a 25.000 pal rate.

I have a pal system and unfortunately if I enable this the jerkiness is worse than without it but I don`t think it`s a processor related problem.

Bet you don`t get any slowdown on games like Driver3 :)

I upgraded it coz i have some encodes @ 1027*432/576 with Q-Pel and GMC.
Sometimes the playback was jerky so i decided to upgrade it with a faster processor and more memory.
Now i can even play HD :)

1027x576 - must take a high bitrate?

Is that with Xvid? Just curious as I find that qpel and gmc makes my rips seem blockier than if I leave it and trellis quant switched off.

I do like my xbox, you seem to like yours even more :)

I was wondering, the new XBMC supports Matroska and vorbis, right?

My buddy also still uses XBMP, and it b0rks when you try to feed it a matroska file with xvid and vorbis. I have to remux my stuff to avi w/ xvid/cbr mp3 to make it work on there.

Mentalmummy

Yep, it supports them :)

Xmbc was quit and the developers moved onto working on Xmbc, it plays Matroska fine as I use Matroska on my Xbox. The version I have is from December last year and plays all Matroska files great but doesn`t let me flick through the chapters in them, just play the whole file like an avi would - unless I`m missing an obvious joypad button that does it.

Yes they're high bitrate encodings and they're done with xvid1.03.
Dont use GMC with xvid 1.1 beta coz it seems to be buggy (?) and generates blocks.
... and yes, i like my xbox :)

I`ll try with the other settings enabled but GMC off. Thanks :)
