WHAT IS ARCALCULATOR (Introduction for new users)

ARCaltulator is an encoding tool (Rip-pack in the latest version) able of transcode a DVD, DVD previously ripped or an AVI into containers AVI(ODML and Legacy), OGM, or MKV.
It supports any vfw codec you have installed in your PC (with specific support for XviD, DivX and x264). It is also able of encoding audio to MP3, Vorbis OGG, or AAC/MP4 with desired settings.

FEATURES LIST:

-DVD Ripping (you need installed previously DVDDecrypter (http://www.dvddecrypter.com) in your computer)
-D2V projects creation (using latest Donald Graft DGIndex)
-Audio Transcoding: to MP3, Vorbis OGG, or AAC/MP4 (with a nice/powerful GUI for Besweet).
-(Auto)cropping
-Advanced features of Avisynth scriptting: cleaning filters, resizers, deinterlacing filters, QMF, subtitles, misc filters...
-Compressibility Check (which is able of change resolution or video size automatically to the compressibility you choose)
-AVS Optimizer: a tool which will analyze your source, and then it will generate avisynth scripts with specific filtering for each scene using filtering profiles with 10 customizable complexity cases. You can find an example of an AVS generated by AVSOptimizer HERE (http://www.arcalculator.com/descargas/AVSOptimizer.avs).
-Preview (With playback, pause, fullscreen, digital zoom...)
-Video encoding (using avs2avi or external encoders like VirtualDubMod)
-Muxing (into AVI, OGM or MKV) (using AVIMUX GUI and OGMuxer)
-Job Queue: where you can store individually all different jobs mentioned above.
-XviD stats reader.
-And much more...

Latest versions, also have a new tool called "AR Robot", which is able of automatize all the process in a few mouse clicks without renounce to powerful features described before.

The program is multilanguage (Spanish and English). You can add other languages just adding new translated .ini files in languages folder.

It is freeware.

You can download latest version (2.6.0) HERE (http://www.canalxvid.com/pafiledb/pafiledb.php?action=file&id=28).

You can find a mirror HERE (http://www.divxhouse.com/encoding/encoding.php) (MAYBE THIS MIRROR IS NOT UPDATED).

Thanks for the tool! Will try this one out. :)

I have a request to make - can you make all the tooltips + whatever else possible English and not Spanish? I believe your tool can cater to a wider audience this way. I had an earlier version of this tool installed, but didn't do much with it because my Spanish knowledge was zilch.

I think all help tips in this version are translated. The only thing not translated is the manual. But we can´t find anyone who wants translate it, and our english skills are not good enough. Anyways, the manual of this version is 1.5 Beta one. Seth is working in the manual for 2.0 final release, and maybe then we will find someone interested in helping us with the translation.

Here is something which was missed out:

http://img226.exs.cx/img226/886/clipboard018cb.jpg

Good work on the tool. Hopefully you would get someone to volunteer for translating the manual in this thread itself.

Quick question - while calculating AR, is there an option somewhere to recheck AR after ITU-R B.601 is unchecked? Right now ARCalc does it assuming ITU-R B.601 is checked, but I believe the DVD which I am currently testing is not spec-compliant and wasn't authored honoring ITU-R B.601. I know I can manually add 16 pixels to the vertical to assume ITU-R B.601 unchecked, but just wondering if the tool has an option? If not, do you plan to implement one? Thanks.:D

No, we didn´t added that option since, as you say, it is not spec-compliant. But we do not discard to add it in next releases.

A little update can be found HERE (http://www.arcalculator.com/descargas/ARCalculator20RC2Update.zip) with some minor bugs fixed:

-Fixed a little bug adding 1st-pass or 2nd-pass video jobs (Configuration codec window was not showed properly in some special cases).

-Fixed some english help tips.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS: Just replace the ARCalculator.exe file, and folder "languages" with the ones included in this zip file.

We have not think on that, but probably yes, it will be added.

Congratulations for the new version!

I always use ARCalc to make Xvid encodes, and i get great results. I thought you left behind the developing of this tool some months ago, as I saw a brief comment in CanalXvid complaining about nobody reported bugs; actually, I delete the bug list I have done from version 1.5 when I read you had stopped the development and maybe it would have been very useful for this new version.

We left the development almost 6 month ago, however, people began to post bugs, or suggesting new features. So we decided to release a new version with some new features, and a lot of bug fixes. :)

If you can read spanish, there is a full changelog in the program folder where you can find all the fixed bugs that users reported us during all this time. Hopefully, the bugs you found are already fixed in this release.

If someone wants the changelog translated into english, just ask for it.

Yes, you must overwrite it. I think that error is produced because you didn´t closed properly the program before trying to overwrite it.

When do you get that error ? during overwriting, or when you execute the new exe file ?

EDIT: Maybe you only have overwritten exe file, and not the languages folder (it is also in the .zip file). Anyways, if the problem doesn´t dissapear, you can re-download the program in the main link (my signature´s one). I have updated the installer with the fixes.

Thanks. Installation of the whole Rip-pack fixed the error. Earlier I was getting it when I was trying to execute the new exe. No other copies of ARCalculator.exe was running too as per Task Manager.

Question - Is the version still RC1 or should this be RC2 now with the bugfix integrated? The zip file containing the updated exe which you provided was named RC2. ARCalculator20RC2Update.zip to be precise.

DarkDudae

It is still RC1. I updated the installer, but keeping the name RC1. I don´t want new users get confused with the update since it only fixes minor bugs :)

I don´t know what you mean exactly. In matroska muxing, there are two types of Chapters files accepted: xml and OGG (txt) chapters. If you use ARRobot, the chapters will be added automatically in the muxing.

Is that what you mean ?

Just another suggestion:
x.264 codec support along with the previously suggested .mp4 container support just to have a fully AVC+AAC in .mp4 encoding app.

Automatically extracted from de VOBs is that?
Maybe I'm wrong but ARCalculator don't extract chapters files yet....but chapters files (ogm's .txt and matroska's .xml created by other tools, try ChapterXtractor) can be muxed with ARC.

DarkDudae
4th February 2005, 21:00
Chapters list is not extracted from VOB files, but IFO files. ARCalculator doesn´t allow to export chapters list to a file. However, when AR Robot is used inside ARCalculator, chapters list is automatically imported to MKV, OGM, or AVI files automatically.

AR Calculator has support for all vfw codecs you have installed in your PC. However, XviD and DivX have additional support.

In example: you use ARRobot for a full encoding process with xvid or divx. After audio encoding in job queue, ARCalculculator will automatically re-adjust video bitrate in xvid or divx settings with the exact video size =Final Size - Audio Size - Overhead. In case you use another codec, the video size is not changed, so the final size (audio+video) may differ some MegaBytes with the desired ones. The reason is that if you do not use XviD or DivX, the program only can estimate audio size before encoding it.

Anyways, x264 is progressing quickly, so we will add in short special support for it, just like we already have for XviD and DivX.

CHANGELOG

-Added new Help Hints in "Multiplex" section.
-Fixed some Help Hints in english and spanish languages.
-Fixed some bugs in "Manual Mode" (produced when all different jobs were added to Queue manually without AR Robot). These bugs, caused problems in codecs configuration, and audio files were not added automatically to muxing list.
-Manual for ARCalculator 2.0 (in spanish) added (by jjseth).

If someone is interested in helping us translating the manual into english, please, contact with me by P.M.

You can download new version HERE (http://www.canalxvid.com/pafiledb/pafiledb.php?action=file&id=28).

Is this programme like GordianKnot or does it have any other feature ?
Because I read only
- Xvid, Divx and x264 support
- ogm, avi and mkv
and thats all like GK ??!! Are there any advantages in your opinions (I don't want to know whats better, i know that this would be against the rules)

I am having an issue opening a d2v project created using DGIndex 1.2.1 b2 in AR Calculator. It opens without any issues in Gordian Knot 0.34.8 b.

First I get this:
http://img225.exs.cx/img225/3541/arcalcerr15dz.jpg

Upon clicking OK, I get this:
http://img225.exs.cx/img225/3636/arcalcerr20vs.jpg

I have renamed the *.d2v to *.txt and uploaded it here (http://files.bighosting.net/gs30140.txt).

Please let me know if you need more details.

EDIT: It works when I used AR Calculator itself to create the *.d2v project, which in turn used DGIndex 1.1.0 bundled along with it. So my current issue is solved, but I am still curious about the previous error, so I will let my question stand.

Gk 0.34.8 beta use dgindex 1.2.0rc3 wich isn't compatible (the d2v created) with 1.1.0 dgdecode.dll bundled with ArCalculator.

So, or if you want use dgindex 1.2.0x must substitute dgindex/dgdecode with those used in GK

@baer999

Gordian Knot and ARCalculator are very different programs. If you read the FEATURES LIST, you will see a lot of differences. ARCalculator supports all vfw codecs you have installed in your computer (not only xvid, divx and x264), it has more audio encoding possibilities, new Avisynth editing tools, like AVSOptimizer, all different job types can be stored individually in job queue, automatic assistent : AR Robot, etc, etc. The best thing you can do is to try both of them, and get your own conclusions.

@unskinnyboy

If you use a d2v project created with a more recent DGIndex, you need to configure a different mpeg2dec3 decoder in the program settings. Go to: Tools - Tools Menu - Configure Options - General Settings - Use Alternative mpeg2dec3, and change the path to the DGDecode.dll file included in the DGIndex version you are using. Restart the program, and try to open that d2v again. It will work perfectly. Anyways, thanks for the feedback!

It worked. Thanks. Suggestion - Why not provide a meaningful error message to the end user during situations like these? 'Access violation' error message can give out the wrong signal that there is some program bug.

A million thanks for the great tool I've been using with my encodes for years. :)

The only thing I've ever complained in the past was the limit to 704 res that occurred between updates.

Just expressing my gratitude for this great tool.

All the best,

@DarkDudae:

I wonder if you've ever consider implementing HybridfuPP avsi script into Ar Calculator. In case you don't know about it:

This avisynth script (avsi) enables both resizing (selectable algorithm), and filtering. Distinct filters can be applied to the different parts of the picture. The main idea is to strongly filter the less visible parts, and very softly the more visible. HybridFuPP uses the best decisions thanks to its ability to detect edges, motion, dark and very lit areas.

Latest version (french forum):
http://www.unite-video.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=3987&start=960
Info (english, doom9 forum):
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=75669&perpage=20&pagenumber=1

In the past I've been using QMF, but his function allows to apply different settings (resizers/filtering) to different parts within the same frame, while QMF (and I think AVSOptimizer also does, please correct me if I'm wrong) apply same settings (resizers/settings)to all parts of the same frame. In both cases the filtering changes frame to frame, but the difference is in the treatment of parts within the same frame.

Adding this to the ARRobot would be grrrreat :)

DarkDudae
24th February 2005, 00:08
@jkwarras

I had heared about it, but I have not tested it yet. I will take a look on it.

About AVSOptimizer, you are right. It uses a different filtering for each scene (according the complexity), but not for each frame part.

Thanks for the info jkwarras.

I have done some testing with HybridFuPP, and it looks promising. The only problem I see with it, is that it is not addaptative. I mean, it uses the same filtering for low and high bitrates. That is the main advantage of AVSOptimizer.

Anyways, you can combine both of them : AVSOptimizer + HybridFuPP, and apply different HybridFuPP presets for different complexity cases. It would be like an addaptative HFupp.

This is default AVSOptimizer profile (located at ARCalculator folder\Profiles\Default.arp)

C0 = clip.
C1 = clip.BicubicResize(XRES,YRES,0,0.75)
C2 = clip.Unfilter(-5,-5).BicubicResize(XRES,YRES,0,0.75)
C3 = clip.BicubicResize(XRES,YRES,0.333,0.1775)
C4 = clip.BicubicResize(XRES,YRES,0.45,0)
C5 = clip.BicubicResize(XRES,YRES,0.5402,0)
C6 = clip.FluxsmoothST(3,3).BicubicResize(XRES,YRES,0.38,0)
C7 = clip.FluxsmoothST(6,6).BicubicResize(XRES,YRES,0.6,0)
C8 = clip.FluxsmoothST(4,6).BicubicResize(XRES,YRES,1,0)
C9 = clip.FluxsmoothST(7,7).BicubicResize(XRES,YRES,1.80,0)

You can to create your own profile and use it instead of Default.arp

In example:

C0 = clip.LanczosResize(XRES,YRES)
C1 = clip.HybridFuPP(XRES,YRES, preset = "very high")
...
...
C9 = clip.HybridFuPP(XRES,YRES, preset = "Very low")

I will try to create a new equilibrated profile using HybridFuPP in my spare time. Anyways, for next release, I will include HybridFuPP support as QMF alternative.

Here it is a new ARCalculator Update. Remember you need previously installed in your computer ARC 2.0 or ARC 2.1.0. (Links are in the main post).

CHANGELOG

- Added specific compressibility check for x264.
- Some improvements and bugfixes in XviD 1.x stats reader of the program. Now you can compare stats files with different number of frames.
- Fixed a bug opening d2v files with not valid decoders. No more program "exceptions" or "access violations". Now, when you change mpeg2 decoder in the settings of the program, you won´t need to restart.
- Drag and Drop for "Extra files" window.
- New AVSOptimizer profile based in HybridFupp (http://www.arcalculator.com/descargas/HybridFuPP912a.rar) filter. (You need this filter installed in your avisynth's plugins folder).
- Added a little space between AR Robot and Ripping buttons for more clarity.
- New DGIndex 1.3.0 Beta 3 (by Donald Graft) included.
- Fixed a bug showing the bits for pixels. Now, showed data should be correct.

You can download this Update HERE (http://www.canalxvid.com/pafiledb/pafiledb.php?action=file&id=79).

I have been trying this latest version and after coding some videos i have some suggestions to make:

-> In the title window it shows 2.2.0 but in help - about it shows 2.0.0 (i hope that has nothing to do with codec performance)

-> When opening a .d2v after i had opened and/or configured another project it gives me the error "Floating point division by zero" , but if I close and reopen a file it goes good

-> Ar Calculator does not let me choose any customized aspect ratio (only 4:3 and 16:9), only in manual mode but this is useless

-> Does not detect the original resolution and after redefining a new aspect ratio (after modifying width/heigh simultanously) and doing a compressibility check it returns to default aspect ratio as you have defined after opening d2v

-> Crop mode 4 does not adjust 4-multiple when selected, you have to uncheck and recheck the option

-> Ogmuxer says me that i am not using ntfs and stops the batch queue until i click OK. If the output format is avi instead of ogm the resultant avi seems corrupted and splashes avi chunk viewer (with media player classic) Using ogmuxer with ogm seem to work good

-> After configuring compression options and making compressibility test there is no option to save temp data and you have to do it all again if you close ar calculator

-> Documentation uses .chm microsoft propietary format. It would be a good idea to spread it as .html as it is standar and can be viewed even in a mobilar phone. Also some XviD explantion guides made before by DarkDudae for Enigmax-mpg4 would be great to introduce newbies into the codec semi-advanced configuration although is little outdated

Original text:

Great job!

I've just finished to integrate Ar-Calc in the last version of my video editing guide (in Italian) as default DVD->XviD conversion program, but, before to put it online, I have a few questions for you:

Are you plannig to add an option to keep anamorphic resolution (in the "From File" mode)?

Am I the only one that can't use copy&paste on "Manual Edition" or it's simply unsupported? It would be useful to avoid repetition of "Optimize AVS"...

I have 2 doubts about AVS Optimizer:

1) Using "Priority of motion estimation", strong filters are used only on hi-motion scenes, where the definition loss (caused by these filters) is less noticeable and where imperfections of the source are stronger.
Instead, with the default analysis method, also the less compressible low-motion scenes (where definition is more important) are strongly filtered.
For these reasons, why not using "priority of motion.." as default (maybe with a more aggressive profile)?

2) What do you think about this profile for noise removal:

C0 = clip.TTempSmoothF().LanczosResize(XRES,YRES)
C1 = clip.TTempSmoothF(7,5,6).LanczosResize(XRES,YRES)
C2 = clip.TTempSmoothF(7,5,6).LanczosResize(XRES,YRES)
C3 = clip.TTempSmoothF(7,6,7).LanczosResize(XRES,YRES)
C4 = clip.FluxsmoothST(5,3).BicubicResize(XRES,YRES,0.45,0)
C5 = clip.FluxsmoothST(6,4).BicubicResize(XRES,YRES,0.5402,0)
C6 = clip.FluxsmoothST(7,5).BicubicResize(XRES,YRES,0.38,0)
C7 = clip.FluxsmoothST(7,6).BicubicResize(XRES,YRES,0.6,0)
C8 = clip.FluxsmoothST(7,7).BicubicResize(XRES,YRES,1,0)
C9 = clip.FluxsmoothST(7,8).BicubicResize(XRES,YRES,1.80,0)
**Using "Priority of motion"**

Thanks in advance for the answer and for this great program!

About version number in "About window animation", you have not to worry. We just forgot to change the number in the animation screen.

It is normal. Copy & Paste popup menues are disabled in that window. Anyways, you can use CTRL+C (for copy) and CTRL+V (paste).

"Priority of motion estimation" is not addaptative, so, you will get the same AVSOptimizer script with 400 of bitrate than with 1800Kbps.

Default method calculates the "global complexity" of the scene. In example, "a hi-motion + low compressibility" scene will be a "high complexity" scene. Besides, default method is addaptative. It will create more aggresive scripts (higher filtering) if you are using low bitrates, or soft scripts (lower filtering) if you have enough bitrate.

2) What do you think about this profile for noise removal:
C0 = clip.TTempSmoothF().LanczosResize(XRES,YRES)
...

It is OK, but now, you know it is not addaptative.

Ok, I've done a few corrections about this and now the 2.0 version of the guide is online, here (http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?threadid=37480) .
Hope this to be helpful to those who need something better than Dr.DivX (here in Italy it's quite popular...)!

@SpikeSpiegle

Good work with the manual. However, I can read something wrong:

"AVS Optimizer -> Compressibility Test -> Save & Encode -> Multiplex"

The correct order would be: Compressibility Test - AVS Optimizer. I usually use a comp. check before, and I adjust resolution to 60-65% of compressibility. Then, I use AVSOptimizer.

Well, for a "standard" use of AVS Optimizer, this (compt test -> avs opt -> ...) could be a good choice to decide when to use AVS Opt or not...

...but, honestly, I think that this "decision" happens much before and depends mostly on: free time & willpower ;)
Seriously, I mean that, for Avs Opt can always improve quality/size ratio, it should be used -almost- always, independently on the compressibility of the source; then, the decision to use it or not is due to the user.

-- Obviously this is a subjective opinion --

Besides, using non-default profiles/settings (like "Priority of motion est."), you can't tell a priori how the compressibility can change after the optimization of the script, then, it should be better to do a comp test after AVS Opt anyway.

Well, we offer the tool, the user must decide how to use it :). Of course, it is an alternative that could offer good results too. Maybe AVSOptimizer "Filtering Curve" can help too when "Priority of Motion" mode is used.

I have tested the program under W98 several times without any problem. It is pretty strange it eats 50% of your system resources without encoding/comp.check or avsoptimizing. There is a little bug with memory resources when you use preview window, but it is already solved in the new version that we will be released in short.

No, ARCalculator doesn´t have standalone compatibility, mainly because each standalone player has different capabilities. Anyways, you can press the "Configure" codec button in ARRobot, and both, XviD and DivX have differents profiles for Standalone compatibility:

XviD : In Profile @ Level choose "DXN HT PAL" preset, press "more" button and uncheck "Packed bitstream".

For Audio encoding, just leave default settings (MP3 128 VBR).

In this way, you will get compatibility with almost all standalone players.

I'm using the HybrindFupp profile on an interlaced source and i found two things:
1)i use TomsMoComp as deinterlace filter but the Strenght Effort parameter (SE) of this filter is automatically setted by arcalculator to 15 which is too time comsumption IMHO, maybe the possibility to choose in the tools menu which values use for the filter parameters could be better.

2)using the hybribFupp profile the avs script that avsoptimizer returns miss some lines, i think, like:

LoadPlugin("E:\Programmi\AviSynth 2.5\plugins\deen.dll")
LoadPlugin("E:\Programmi\AviSynth 2.5\plugins\MaskTools.dll")
LoadPlugin("E:\Programmi\AviSynth 2.5\plugins\Msharpen.dll")

LoadPlugin("E:\Programmi\AviSynth 2.5\plugins\UnFilter.dll")
LoadPlugin("E:\Programmi\AviSynth 2.5\plugins\MVTools.dll")

That is just because HybridFupp filters are not included in ARCalculator (We only include the profile). Yes, of course you can edit it manually before AVSOptimizer pass. About "alternativo" profile, is just an alternative to default profile. (Anyways, almost everybody prefer Default's one).

Here you have another profile designed by grua for analog captures:

C0=clip.PeachSmoother(NoiseReduction=20, Stability=30, Spatial=0).LanczosResize(XRES,YRES)
C1=clip.PeachSmoother(NoiseReduction=20, Stability=30, Spatial=0).BicubicResize(XRES,YRES,0,0.75)

Hi,

I'm getting into someproblems while trying to use ARCalculator 2.6.0. I know it must be stupid and I'll probably making a huge obvious mistake, but after a while trying to figure out I can't find it...

I'm just trying to encode my shortfilms with arcaculator into xvid. I load the avi, follow the different steps: size, crop, create avs file. Everything is fine, but when I try to run avsopimizer (or compresibility test) I get a reeeeeally fast encode window and nothing is optimized. With compresibility test I get mad numbers like 400.5 % and stuff like that. My quesion is, is something obvious I'm missing?

And what do I have to do in order to run avsopimizer and compresibility test right? I mean, should I under 'configure codec' setup the codec as the first pass, the second pass or run a queue job for both?

Any help will be great appreciated :thanks:

Hi again, sorry for my delay with the answers (summer holidays).
There is a bug with HybridFUpp script in ARCalculator 2.6.0, that is the reason that some of you have problems to make it work properly.

About if "Priority to motion estimation" is better or not for HybridFupp... is something subjetive. I allways prefer Normal method, since it is addaptative while "motion estimation" isn´t. Besides, Normal method also uses motion estimation.

I have fixed it (and many other bugs). I also have rewritten all the audio encoding part changing the GUI and adding new options.

I added compatibility with latest DGIndex versions too, MP4 muxing (with overhead calculations for this container)... etc, so I guess ARCalculator 2.7.0 will be on-line pretty soon.

Besides, I am already working in a MP4 Menu Editor for future releases ;)

Hi, folks. After browsing the Canalxvid forum, I find the following answer to the question about the appearance of the new version of ARCalculator:
La verdad es que de momento se puede decir que el lanzamiento de una nueva versión está aplazado sin fecha por problemas de tiempo.
Los trabajos, estudios, y vida en general nos tienen a todos bastante ocupados y ni que decir a DarkDudae que es el currante así que aunque nos gustaría estar jugando con una nueva versión ya mismo todo está de momento en el aire...Eso sí, en el momento en que veamos la nueva versión estoy seguro de que dará mucho que hablar.
That means " Actually, in this moment it can be said that the appearance of a new version has been postponed (without known date) due to time problems.
Jobs, studies and life, in general, made us busy enough, and this is true specially for Darkdudae which is the main worker. Accordingly, though we would use the new version just now, all is hanged in the balance...Anyway when the new version appears we will talk constantly about it"

Thus, I think we will suffer for a while.

At this time, Ar Calculator development is stopped.
We haven´t time to implement more features in the program, but the support to the tool is alive in canalxvid and divxhouse forums.

I hope in the future We can resume the development, but at this time, what it has is what it has.

Regards.

Does anyone still have the install files for this??? think the latest was 2.70b....and does anyone still have the HybridFupp files that work with the AvsOptimizer?
Don't know if the HybridFupp files have been updated since last they were posted in this thread. I mean if they were, then some compatibility issue could have occurred....i don't know. I'm still a noob, sad to say.
Just remember that I was fascinated by this program because of the AvsOptimizer function. Is there any other program that offers this function???
Sad to see the development end. Maybe it will continue at some point. Who knows. Anyway....Job well done, its an awesome tool, thank you for your time spent on it!
